Getting to know “On the One.”

It seems each genre of music has its own language. In bluegrass, when you “take a break” it means it’s time to take a solo on your instrument. In jazz, well, it means you go outside and physically take a break from the music.

And that brings us to “On the One.” I had a hunch of what this band name/musical term was about, but just to make sure, I emailed the band to find out. As always, finding out a little more about these guys makes it all that more fun. Especially when you find out that the band is listening to some of the same artists that are in my CD collection. I mean, Maceo Parker?! If you haven’t checked out “Life on Planet Groove,” I’d recommend downloading that one right away.

It should get you in the mood for the One, the Two, and all of the other notes in the measure.

“On the One” will be at River City Saloon on Friday, July 31.
