• Aug. 28 — Families in the Park, 6-9 p.m. at Jackson Park in Hood River. Featured performer is Mingo Fishtrap (R&B and soul) from 7-9 p.m.; warm-up entertainment begins at 6 p.m. The Hood River Lions Club will hold a fund-raising barbecue.

Aug. 30 — Jr. Ranger Program and Campfire Talk at Lost Lake, 3:30 and 7 p.m. Bring the kids to learn about the environment through educational activities, or stop by the campfire for presentations about bears, mountain lions or Leave No Trace ethics. Topics vary.

Sept. 3 — Storytime returns to the Hood River County Library after a two-week hiatus.

10:30-10:50 a.m. — Itsy Bitsy Story Time: This is for toddlers up to age 3 who like to wiggle, dance, listen to stories, then wiggle some more. Parent or guardian must accompany child(ren).

11-11:30 a.m. — Big Kids Story Time: This is for kids aged 3-6 to have fun, sing songs and enjoy stories. A creative craft follows story time.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Aug. 28 — Gorge Grown Farmers Market, 4-7 p.m. at Hood River Middle School. In addition to fresh food grown by farmers in communities across the Gorge, enjoy live music by Pennies and Small Change and pony rides for the kids. Master Gardener John Ihle will provide information on organic pest control and Master Food Preserver Ann Lameka will be available to answer questions.

Aug. 29 — End of summer “Splash Bash” at the Hood River Aquatic Center, 1-5 p.m. Pool admission will be just $1 for everyone. Hot dogs, chips and a drink will cost $2.

Aug. 30 — Native American Dance Performance, 2-3 p.m. at The Museum at Warm Springs, Highway 26 in Warm Springs, Ore. The event is free.

Aug. 31 — Cloud Cap Inn tour, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Learn the history behind Mount Hood’s first structure. Space limited; call (541) 352-6002 for reservations.

Aug. 31 — Free Sunday Supper at the Soul Cafe, 1102 12th St., on the Heights in Hood River, 5-6:30 p.m. Soul Cafe provides a safe place for Hood River’s youth to engage in activities that help build the foundation they need to survive and thrive in today’s world. Aug. 31 — Community interest meeting for the “Bridge of the Gods” opera, 5-6 p.m. at The History Museum of Hood River County. This meeting is to see if there is community interest in reviving the historic performance of the “Bridge of the Gods opera first performed in Hood River in 1951. It is being considered as part of the Oregon Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Sept. 1 — Columbia River Cross Channel Swim, beginning at 8 a.m. Pre-registered swimmers will check in at the Hood River Visitors Center at 5:45 a.m.; day-of-swim registrants will be offered any unfilled spaces beginning at 7 a.m. (Number of swimmers is limited to 550.) Sept. 1 — Tai chi at Wilson Park (at the east end of May Street) continues, weather permitting, during the summer, 6 p.m. on Mondays. Free to all. Led by Janet Essley, or a stand-in.

Sept. 2 — Annual Doggie Paddle at Hood River Aquatic Center, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Admission is $3 for one dog and $5 for a multiple-dog family. All proceeds benefit the Hukari Animal Shelter. The Center will be closed from Sept. 2-18 for maintenance and will reopen Friday, Sept. 19 at 8 a.m. with the fall schedule.

Sept. 3-4 — Work day at the Japanese Heritage Garden at OSU Extension Center, 8-11 a.m. each day. Volunteers are sought to help begin planting structural plant material. Work will continue Sept. 5, if needed. The Extension Center is located at 3005 Experiment Station Drive, Hood River.

Sept. 4 — Rehearsals begin for the Mid-Columbia Community Choir benefit concerts. The choir will perform for the Hymns of Thanksgiving program to benefit Habitat for Humanity on Nov. 22, and also perform its annual Christmas Cantata the weekend of Dec. 5-7. Sept. 5 — Fund-raiser for Hukari Animal Shelter Adopt-A-Dog program, 5-8 p.m. at the Book Stop in downtown Hood River, co-hosted by local jewelry artist Robin Panzer. Half of the evening’s profits from all book and jewelry sales will be donated to the Adopt-A-Dog program.

Sept. 5-6 — “Preparing for the Birth of Your Baby,” a series of classes to educate and support expectant parents offered by Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital, 6-9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The fee is $45 per couple; call (541) 387-6340 to register.

Sept. 6 — “Throw For Books” disc-golf tournament, 11 a.m. at Sorosis Park in The Dalles, a fund-raiser to purchase books for The Dalles SMART and Reach Out and Read programs. $25 registration fee includes tournament disc and lunch. Sept. 6 — Vino and Fido, a benefit for Hood River’s Adopt-A-Dog, noon to 6 p.m. at Wy’East Vineyards, 5 miles south of Hood River on Highway 35. Mutt mug photos and contest, noon to 4:30 p.m.; scavenger hunt, 1 p.m.; doggie diving, 2 p.m.; grooming tips and nutrition, 3 p.m.; agility demo, 4 p.m.

Sept. 6-7 — NWISA Singlehanded Championships, the last CGRA sailing event of the season. High school sailors of the Northwest Interscholastic Sailing Association will compete in this qualifying regatta for the National High School Singlehanded Championships to be held in October in Ithaca, N.Y. Sept. 7 — Escape From the Gorge Triathlon beginning at Marine Park in Cascade Locks, 7 a.m. with a Tri-For-Kids event at approximately 10:30 a.m. For more information or to register visit www.trifreak.com.

Sept. 12 — Free hazardous waste collection for residents of Wasco, Sherman and Hood River counties, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at The Dalles Disposal Service, 1317 W. First St. Agricultural producers and small businesses can dispose of up to $400 worth of chemicals at no charge. Sept. 13 — “A Taste of the Town” at Mt. Hood Town Hall, “Celebrating Culture, Cuisine and Community,” noon to 5 p.m. This quarterly “live and local” event will offer live music and sampling of various foods prepared in a local competition including a barbecue with side salad, dessert and homemade salsa. Sept. 13 — First annual Rising Moon Festival, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at The Learning Garden at OSU Extension grounds, 2990 Experiment Station Drive, Hood River. Three local bands will provide live music. Tickets for this 21-and-over event are $15 and include admission, hors d’oeuvres and one complimentary beverage. Sept. 16 — Wind workshop for rural landowners, hosted by Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development and partners, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hood River County Library. Sept. 20 — Off-trail hikes in the Mount Adams Wilderness of Gifford Pinchot National Forest, led by Darryl and Darvel Lloyd. Both hikes are about 8 miles round-trip and are quite strenuous. REUNIONS

EXHIBITS

“100 Years — 100 Things,” a themed exhibit at The History Museum of Hood River County to honor the county’s Centennial Celebration. The show features 100 artifacts that are 100 years old or older.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays, through September. The museum has extended family hours during August, when it is open until 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Admission is free; however, donations are accepted and help with the ongoing outreach and archive preservation that is vital to the museum, and its mission to the community.

Through Aug. 30 — “Gorge Artists Create,” at The Dalles Art Center.

Through Aug. 30 — Art quilts by Rhonda Harris at the Hood River County Library. Harris, a Hood River quilter, used hand-dyed and native-painted African fabric in her art quilts.

Through Aug. 31 — “Interpretation” at the Columbia Center for the Arts, with an artists reception from 6-8 p.m. Fourteen artists in various media explore the same topics using their own unique styles.
