Since the New Year began, the Hood River Valley High School
speech team has made a name for itself at two recent
tournaments.
At the Glencoe Crimson Tide on Jan. 20, three competitors came
home with hardware. Lauren Hay, in her first outing of the
season, took second place in Poetry Reading.
Spencer Bailey took the award for Outstanding Chair in Student
Congress, the highest award granted in that event. Marcus
Fridley, who competed in the Novice Division of Prose Reading,
tied for first place in that event.
On Feb. 2 and 3, 24 team members traveled to McMinnville to
compete in the 75th Annual Singletary Speech and Debate
Tournament. After two days of competition, Hood River Valley
came home winners.
Emma Fish took sixth place in Radio Commentary, out of a field
of 54 competitors. “Emma is technically a Novice,” commented
team co-captain August Jackson, “but she held her own in the
Open Division, beating many competitors with a lot more
experience than she has.”
Marcus Fridley, who chose to move up to Open Prose, took sixth
place in a field of 41. “Marcus is an inspiration,” co-captain
Kieran Lerch noted, “he realized that he could easily beat
novices all season, so he bumped himself to the higher division
and still placed very well.”
The Cross Examination Debate team of Kieran Lerch and August
Jackson won two of their four matches, as did the Public Team of
Elliott Daggett and Chase Drum.
The Senior Public Team of Bryce Dalbey and Matt Ribkoff won
three out of four of their matches, matched by the novice public
debate team of Roberto Nunez and Eliot Woodrich.
The big win of the day was the Public Team of Tyler Colesar and
Patrick Sadil, who advanced to semi-finals to defeat Roseburg.
“In the final round, they were narrowly defeated (3-2) by
Glencoe,” Lerch said, “taking second place in a field of 26
teams. But, they are such polished speakers that Patrick took
first place speaker and Tyler took second.”
