The Hood River County Education Foundation awarded 13 teacher
grants. There were 28 grants received and all of the projects
were excellent, according to Mike Schend of the Foundation.
The following is a list of the award-winning proposals. Mid
Valley Elementary set a record by receiving seven of them. The
funds were generated by the Trail Band Christmas concert, plus
foundation investments specially set aside for teacher grants.
* Myra Norris from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded $750
to purchase bilingual videos, books and audio resources to be
shared between Mid Valley and Wy’east Middle School libraries.
* Judie Holt-Mohar from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded
$750 for purchasing a scanner and biographies.
Students will research important people in the history of
America and present an interactive PowerPoint presentation.
* Kathryn Marroquin from Westside Elementary was awarded
$500 for purchasing books that ELL/migrant students can check
out and take with them to Mexico. The grant also included
purchasing disposable cameras so these students can document
their time and share it with their classmates.
* Juanita Trejo from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded
$740 for purchasing educational materials that parents can use
at home with incoming kindergarten students.
* Sara Martin and Marie Pickering from Parkdale
Elementary were awarded $750 for purchasing headphones and audio
players for beginning and struggling readers.
* Cyndi Sischo from Hood River Middle School was awarded
$675 for hiring services of a certified music therapist for
special needs children.
* Debbie Carter from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded
$745 for purchasing a mobile homework station that would be used
by all grades.
* Katherine Jacobson from Westside Elementary was awarded
$737.35 for purchasing 19 sets of nonfiction and fiction books
containing audio.
* Mikka Irusta from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded
$675 for purchasing an interactive electronic device that
teaches kindergarten students letter sounds and names.
* Larry Wyatt from Westside Elementary was awarded $750
for purchasing ukuleles and guitars in cases that can be used in
music class and for checking out for home use.
* Tom Dalbey from Westside Elementary was awarded $745.86
for purchasing a manipulative math kit that will be shared with
other teachers. Packets will also be checked out for home use.
* Casey Norris from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded
$720 for purchasing various levels of Spanish materials mainly
in science and social studies.
* JoAnn Frazier from Mid Valley Elementary was awarded
$750 for purchasing family math backpacks designed to provide
meaningful math activities for the entire family. |
