Twenty-seven members of Hood River Valley High School traveled
to Eugene to compete in the Bower-Aly Speech and Debate
Tournament.
By the time six rounds of debate and three rounds of Individual
Events were tabulated, 17 speaking Eagles advanced to the next
level of competition.
Both Public Debate teams advanced to Octafinals. The team of
Chase Drum and August Jackson lost 2-1 in their Octafinal round.
Bryce Dalbey and Matt Ribkoff won their Octafinal Round 2-1, but
were defeated 3-0 in Quarterfinals. However, Dalbey’s speaking
skills were impressive enough to earn him Fifth Place out of 84
speakers.
Spencer Bailey and Jon Wadman participated in Student Congress,
advancing to Saturday’s Super Congress.
Spencer Bailey’s bill to repeal Measure 11 was narrowly
defeated, but Jon Wadman’s resolution to increase Pell Grants
for college students was resoundingly passed. Wadman earned
fourth place in Student Congress.
The junior dual interpretation teams of Susanna Gabay and Ryan
Young and Marian Gunderson and Madeline Gobbo advanced to
semifinals.
Gabay and Young performed “Bullshot Crummond,” while Gobbo and
Gunderson performed three Monty Python vignettes.
“Our senior Dual Interp team of Lauren Merge and Dillon Slagle
continued their winning ways with their rendition of “Much Ado
About Nothing” by William Shakespeare. They ended the day in
second place out of 24 teams in Senior Division.
Morgan Bell advanced to Finals with her expository speech on the
missing city of Atlantis, winning sixth place.
Emma Spaulding, Teddy Meyer, and Kelbe Thompson advanced to
semifinals in Dramatic Interpretation. Thompson and Spaulding
performed works of Euripides.
Meyer interpreted “How to Tell a War Story” by Tim O’Brien.
Sarah Gunderson advanced to semis with her Humorous Interp of
“Kick Me.”
Next up for Hood River Valley Speech Team is the National
Forensics Qualifier on March 9, 10 and 11. On April 8, Hood
River will host the Speech District Tournament.
Hood River is in a speech district with Bend, Mountain View and
Summit High Schools. Summit and Mountain View have excellent
speech programs, consistently placing in many events at the
State Tournament, which will be held April 20-22 in McMinnville
at Linfield College.
