Don’t just ‘dump’ useable building materials

The Gorge Rebuild-it Center has opened a “drop site” for usable building materials at the Hood River Transfer Station, 3440 Guignard Drive.

Any usable construction and demolition debris can be dropped off at the new site. The Rebuild-it Center will add the usable material to its inventory.

The transfer station opens at 9 a.m.

“As former recycling coordinator for Hood River County, I am intimately familiar with our local waste stream,” said David Skakel, executive director of the Rebuild-it Center.

“Construction and demolition debris generally comprises approximately 20 percent of the waste pie.” Skakel hopes to salvage some of that useable material with the drop-site.

The Gorge Rebuild-it Center is a nonprofit retail store that sells used building materials. Inventory is obtained through donations from contractors, homeowners and businesses.

Products range from kitchen cabinets, windows and doors to electrical and plumbing supplies and appliances.
