Liz Whitmore was selected this week by the Hood River County
School District Board of Directors to fill the vacancy in Zone
1, which includes Cascade Locks.
Whitmore was supported by the Westside Elementary School Local
Committee. Zone 1 includes the city of Cascade Locks and the
western part of the Westside attendance area. Whitmore will be
sworn in at the April 12 regular Board meeting.
The vacancy in Zone 1 occurred when Kathleen Malone resigned
from the Board last month.
The Board of Directors, at a special Board meeting, interviewed
three candidates: Lynae Hansen of Cascade Locks, and Westside
residents Sue Powers and Liz Whitmore. Candidates have to reside
in Zone 1 and Local School Committees were asked to nominate
candidates.
“The Board had a very hard time choosing from among three very
good candidates,” said Jan Veldhuisen Virk, board chair.
Whitmore is a graduate of University of California Berkeley with
a B.A. in architecture. She worked for Gap, Inc. for 11 years,
with responsibility for construction management for more than 50
Gap and Banana Republic stores.
“There is nothing more valuable that we can give our children
than a solid education. It is their gateway to a secure and
successful future,” Whitmore said in a letter to the Board.
The Cascade Locks Local Committee will be asked to recommend an
ex-officio Board member for Cascade Locks to the Board for its
consideration.
The provision for the ex-officio Board member to provide direct
input to the Board from a Cascade Locks resident was added in
2004 when the Board rezoned based on zone population and Zone 1
was expanded to include the Westside area. |
