The District 14 Speech and Debate district qualifying tournament was Saturday, April 8, at Hood River Valley High School. Several HRV speech team members qualified to compete at the state tournament to be held April 20-22 at Linfield College in McMinnville.

All first- and second-place finishers will represent District 14 at the state tournament.

Earning first place distinction for Hood River Valley were the dual interpretation team of Lauren Merge and Dillon Slagle, Susanna Gabay in Prose Reading and Ryan Young in radio commentary.

Lauren Hay earned two first-place finishes in poetry reading and in serious interpretation.

Earning first-place debate finishes were the Oregon style cross-examination debate team of Kieran Lerch and Lauren Merge; and Chase Drum in Lincoln-Douglas policy debate.

Second-place finishes went to the dual interpretation team of Marian Gunderson and Madeline Gobbo, Kenan Heppe in radio commentary, and Emma Spaulding in serious interpretation.

Debaters qualifying to go to the state tournament in second place were the Public team of Bryce Dalbey and Matt Ribkoff; and Lincoln-Douglas policy debater August Jackson.

Spencer Bailey and Anastasia Maletz also qualified for state in student congress.

Third-place finishers, who will step in as alternates if one of the designated competitors cannot attend, are Morgan Bell in expository, Kenan Heppe in impromptu, Kelbe Thompson in both poetry reading and serious interpretation and Teddy Meyer in prose reading.

“The district tournament was a success for Hood River Valley in every way,” said Hood River Speech Coach Regena Rafelson. “Not only did several of our team members do well in their events, but the community showed its support of competitive speech.

“Almost a hundred parents, community members, and school district employees volunteered some or all day Saturday to help judge, work in the tab room, or provide food and snacks for judges.”
