The last hour of two days each week at May Street School is dedicated to fitness.

Students and some parents and staff ran or walked around the school Monday, logging the number of laps in the “Run For Fitness” program.

“It’s cool,” said fourth-grader Conner Bauld. “I like running. We get exercise and lose weight.” He and other participants — 82 students and 17 adults — took breaks and drank plenty of water as they made their circuits. Three times around the school equals one mile.

Run For Fitness continues Friday and repeats Monday and Friday for the next three weeks. The final two weeks will be tabulated for class competition, according to Kyle Turner, first-year physical education teacher at May Street.

Run For Fitness, which this year emphasizes walking as an alternative, had been a long-time spring tradition at the school. It returned Monday after a one-year hiatus, under Turner, with input from Stephanie Perkins, former PE specialist and now a kindergarten teacher at the school. Turner created new charts for students and adults to mark laps around the school.

Meanwhile, students at Mosier Community School are part of the “Move It” fitness program, which aims to motivate students to be active every day by walking.

Move It! An 11-week challenge to motivate elementary students to track their weekly steps, set goals and become more active by the end of the program. Students receive a pedometer, backpack, wristband and water bottle for participating.

School principals, classroom teachers and physical education teachers also are encouraged to participate with the children. Read about how the students are doing along the 11-week challenge by logging on to www.mosierschool.com
