“Handsome and gregarious” is how resident John Lepke described the more than 100 Hood River Valley High School National Honor Society members who gathered at Providence Down Manor on Sunday, April 23, to host the group’s annual “Spring Fling,” a special “prom” for senior citizens.

The gaily dressed young people brought spring flowers that decorated each table, then offered cookies, fruit and “Spring Fling” lemonade punch to their honored guests. After everyone was comfortable, the two generations even danced together.

“We met nearly 20 young people before the dance was over,” added Lucille Herman. “They were all wonderful. We often hear the downside of today’s teenagers. It was nice to see the other side of the story. These kids gave up a beautiful Sunday afternoon to come here to talk to and entertain us old prunes,” she laughed.

“It’s just great to see everyone out there dancing and having fun connecting with others in our community,” said National Honor Society president Tom Wanzek. “And, it’s fun to help these folks celebrate the best years of their lives. I want to thank the Providence employees who helped us make this event happen.”

Swing tunes and other danceable music, provided by Dan Crothers and Henry Schifter, allowed some of the older people to “cut the rug” with their teenage partners. Other musical entertainment was provided by students Heather van Swaay, who played haunting tunes on her flute, and by Kenan Heppe and Fritz von Flotow playing the piano.

Community seniors enjoyed the party along with Down Manor residents. Ron Renier and his wife praised the National Honor Society for hosting such an enjoyable event, just for their age group.

Honor Society member Maricella Marquez summed up the afternoon by saying, “I am really getting to know these people, and I find we have more in common than I thought.”
