Work Day was a learning experience for more than
25 HRVHS Advanced Biology students, who studied the habitat, agriculture and recreation demands upon the Hood River watershed, and then did some streamside cleanup near Copper Dam. From left are Adam Holyoak, Hood River Watershed Coordinator Jordan Vinograd,

This year 538 students from Hood River Valley High School participated in the May 4 Community Work Day, raising more than $18,000 for charity.

The HRVHS students chose three charities to receive the day’s funds: United Way, American Cancer Society Relay For Life, and The Next Door, Inc., Youth and Family Services.

Participation was up by about 90 students compared to last year, according to Summit Advisor Wendy Herman, who coordinated much of the event.

“There seemed to be a lot more freshmen participating this year,” she said. Next year she plans to start keeping statistics on the numbers from each grade level.

Now it’s time for employers to ante up the $35 (or more) they agreed to pay for the students’ services, if they haven’t done so already. Checks should be made out to HRVHS, with the name of the student in the memo line. Some teachers will give extra credit for students who participated, Herman said.

Checks can either be given to the student “employees,” or mailed to the school at 1220 Indian Creek Road, Hood River, OR 97031.
