Surfing — in cyberspace — happened under a tent Friday at the
kickoff of the Embarq (formerly Sprint) 90-day trial of a new
Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) broadband network in Hood River.
County Economic Development Coordinator Bill Fashing, right,
watches as Embarq officials Chris Miller and Dave Hiatt log on
to the Web. Mayor Linda Streich thanked Embarq in a brief
ceremony at Georgiana Smith Park. The city and other public
agencies are encouraging the community to make use of the Wi-Fi
service, to gauge public interest. Public safety and public
works employees, residents, and visitors have free access
wireless mobile broadband technology for e-mail, browsing and
downloading from most locations in Hood River. For more
