Surfing — in cyberspace — happened under a tent Friday at the kickoff of the Embarq (formerly Sprint) 90-day trial of a new Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) broadband network in Hood River. County Economic Development Coordinator Bill Fashing, right, watches as Embarq officials Chris Miller and Dave Hiatt log on to the Web. Mayor Linda Streich thanked Embarq in a brief ceremony at Georgiana Smith Park. The city and other public agencies are encouraging the community to make use of the Wi-Fi service, to gauge public interest. Public safety and public works employees, residents, and visitors have free access wireless mobile broadband technology for e-mail, browsing and downloading from most locations in Hood River.
