Some of the most community-minded students in Hood River County
were acknowledged by the Hood River Elks Lodge Sunday with its
ninth annual Student of the Year awards dinner.
Before the Students of the Year were announced, Elks member
George Johnson named the Students of the Month for May: Angie
Eastman and Kevin Dye. (Their stories will appear in a future
issue of the News.)
Alex Evans and Madison Kyger were named Students of the Year and
each received a $1,500 scholarship. Both were students of the
month for February.
Other awards went to Jenna Fisher, Meghan Flem, Tim Chance and
Tom Wanzek, who each received $250.
The guest speaker was Mike Schend, who urged the students to
make time in college for volunteer work.
“I know I may be preaching to the choir, here, because the
reason you are in this room tonight is because you have already
learned the importance of helping out in your community,” he
said. “You’re going to be busy when you get to college, but find
time to volunteer for as many things as possible.”
Not only does volunteer work help the community, he said, it can
help the volunteer immeasurably.
“Available resources multiply 10 times when you volunteer,
because of the connections you make,” he said. “It’s power — and
you can’t get that power from anything else. “Make people happy
— make yourself happy — volunteer.”
Students of the month are chosen by a vote of teachers. A group
of past lodge presidents vote for the student of the year, with
community service weighted 60 percent, academics 20 percent, and
extra-curricular activities 20 percent. |
