Local students make their marks
at colleges and universities

Grant Harman, of Mosier, has been named to the 2006 winter term president’s list at Oregon Institute of Technology. He is majoring in radiologic science.
Inclusion on the list requires a 3.70 grade point average or above. Only full-time students (12 credit hours or more) are eligible for academic honors.

Boise State University granted degrees or certificates to 1,653 students during its 78th commencement ceremonies May 13 in Taco Bell Arena, with President Bob Kustra officiating.
Rosibel Labra, of Hood River, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration.
Jenny L. Villagomez, of Hood River, earned a Technical Certificate in Surgical Technology.
Boise State University is the largest institution of higher education in Idaho, with about 18,600 students and 2,200 faculty and staff. More than 190 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and technical degrees are offered within eight colleges.

Shawna McMahon, of Hood River, has been named to the George Fox University dean’s list for the 2006 spring semester.
To be included on the academic honor roll, a student must earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher while taking at least 12 graded credit hours of classes.
A sophomore majoring in business administration, McMahon is the daughter of Craig and Linda McMahon of Hood River.

The University of Oregon has announced its dean’s list for student achievement winter term. To qualify for the lists, students must be in good academic standing and must have completed 12 or more graded credits for the term The required minimum grade point average is 3.75 on a scale having 4.0 as a straight-A average.
Students from Hood River who were named to the list include Jose Avila, sophomore, undeclared major; Ashley Nunamaker, senior, business administration; and Jonathon Wall, senior, educational studies.

Meagan Thomsen, of Hood River, recently graduated from the University of Portland with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
University President Rev. E. William Beauchamp conferred 732 bachelor’s and 203 master’s degrees during the commencement exercises held May 7 in the Earle A. And Virginia H. Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.

Elise Meierbachtol, of Hood River, was named to the Montana State University 2006 spring semester honor roll in May. Her 4.0 GPA earned her a place on the president’s list.

The University of Portland has announced its 2006 spring semester dean’s list. Students need at least a 3.5 grade point average to make the dean’s list.
Local students named to the list include Elizabeth Karr, of Parkdale, a freshman majoring in biology; Treshia Sewell, of Hood River, a sophomore majoring in biology; and Gena Folts, of Hood River, a sophomore majoring in business administration.

Krista Apland, of Hood River, was among more than 1,500 St. Olaf College students recognized for academic achievement at the college’s annual Honors Day convocation on May 5. Apland is a senior at St. Olaf.
Honors Day recognizes St. Olaf students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.3 or higher (on a 4.0 scale).
Apland was also one of 22 St. Olaf College seniors who were honored at the convocation as members of Eta Sigma Phi, classics honor society. The college’s highest-ranking classics majors are selected for membership in Eta Sigma Phi.

Jodie Gates, of Hood River, appeared in a Whitman College dance production on May 5-6. The production, titled “Ominous” because of its focus on the darker side of human nature, included centerpiece work, “De Pazzi,” and three shorter pieces: “Changes,” “entanglement,” and “Elegy.”
Gates, a junior majoring in sociology and environmental studies, played a court dancer in “De Pazzi” and danced in “Entanglement.” She is the daughter of Steven Gates and Virginia Irving, of Hood River.
Whitman is a private, independent liberal arts and sciences college of 1,450 students in Walla Walla, Wash.

Gretchen Bellus, of Hood River, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Roanoke College in Salem, Va., at its 164th commencement ceremony held May 6. She is the daughter of Brian and Valerie Bellus of Hood River.
