James and Alice Kimball
724 May Street
A very different sort of home sits on the corner of Eighth and May in
Hood River. Built in 1924 as the Christian Alliance Church, it was
later used as an IOOF hall. Darin Gardner bought the empty building in
1998 and did a complete renovation.
Gardner turned the 7,000-square-foot home into a loft-like home, but
with defined areas of privacy.
The Kimball family — Alice, Jim, and their two daughters, Zoe and Ryan
— bought the house in 2005 and made several changes to the home's
interior as well as doing extensive landscape work around the house.
The home's central area includes a living room, dining room and
kitchen. Colorful roman shades adorn the huge windows. Alice loves
color and uses it tastefully throughout the house in a delightful mix.
Ladders lead to sleeping lofts in the girls' rooms. Even the bathrooms
are unique, with oversized tubs and intricate tile work.
Much of the artwork in the house is done by friends and family
members, including mosaics created by Alice.

Martin and Kathleen Sanders
808 Frankton Road
Martin Sanders is a builder and this home is one of 10 he has built in
the past decade. A lovely Westside estate, it sits on a 2.43-acre site
with mountain views. A stacked rock fireplace and 16-foot ceilings
highlight the living area, which opens onto an airy kitchen where
Martin, Kathleen and sons Travis and Taylor spend a lot of time.
The kitchen is one of the home's highlights, featuring solid cherry
wood cabinets, slab granite counters and an eco-friendly composite
sink.
The home's master suite features a large walk-in closet with custom
cabinetry and a huge bathroom with a shower, Jacuzzi tub and double
vanity.
The home's second level features a bonus room with a pool table,
television and exercise equipment.

Mike and Annemarie Ellsworth
1675 Country Club Road
Built in 1908, the Ellsworths’ wonderful country home sits on 40 acres
- 20 of which are a working orchard.
The Ellsworths — Mike, Annemarie and their three sons, Zak, Max and
Luke — did a complete remodel on the old farm house when they bought
it several years ago. They knocked out walls, raised the ceilings,
added a beautiful staircase and a stunning wrap-around porch. The
Ellsworths also installed new floors made of Brazilian Cherry,
hand-scraped to look old.
Highlights of the 4,600-square-foot home include a large farm kitchen
with state-of-the-art appliances — including an under-counter
refrigerator — and a unique wine rack. The French doors at the top of
the staircase open into three bedrooms and a master suite, which
features a deck with views of the valley and Mount Adams.
A huge downstairs playroom makes the perfect place for kids and pets
to hang out.

Jack and Susan Kaady
1760 Fourth Street
The Kaadys — Susan, Jack, daughter Hope and three dogs and a cat —
moved into this home two years ago. The home was built in 2001 and the
Kaadys have added some unique touches, thanks to Susan's skills as an
interior designer.
The living room, with a Mount Hood view, opens to a kitchen and dining
area. Walls are painted in earthy green, red and gold tones.
The home's upstairs features a roomy master suite as well as a game
room. Hope's bedroom offers the best view of Mount Hood in the house.

Tony and Marj Baker
510 Frankton Road
This 1918 home sits on a one-acre lot and features 3,425 square feet
of living space in a unique layout. The Bakers bought the home in 2000
and did an extensive remodel, knocking out walls, removing dark wood
paneling and enlarging the living room. A formerly brick fireplace was
redone in natural stone.
The theme of the home is Victorian, aided by Marj's extensive
collection of antiques. She also has an impressive doll collection,
which is displayed in various rooms of the house.
The home's extensive grounds have been turned into a large manicured
lawn and gardens. A multi-level deck provides a peaceful sitting area.

Cascade Home Builders
1672 Fifth Street
Lyle McQueen-Smith, a native of Calgary, Canada, has been building and
remodeling homes for more than 30 years. He's currently built more
than 100 new homes in all price ranges.
His latest project is this 2,139-square-foot Craftsman style home in
the Elliot Park subdivision. The home features three bedrooms, 2 ½
baths plus a large finished bonus room above the garage.
The home's special upgrades include granite tile countertops, maple
cabinets with under-cabinet lighting, columns, arches and crown
moldings. The home is plumbed for central vacuum, and the living room
and bonus room are wired for a home theater. |
