School board opposes Measures 48 and 41

October 14, 2006

At its Wednesday night meeting, the Hood River County School District board of directors decided to take a position against Ballot Measure 48: State Spending Limit, and Ballot Measure 41: Federal Reduction.

Regarding Measure 48, the board said that the estimated potential cost to HRCSD would be $3.5 million for the current 2005-07 budget and an estimated $3.1 to $7.1 million in the 2007-09 budget; and that the state of Colorado, which adopted a population-plus-inflation limit in 1992, has experienced many problems leading to voter suspension of the measure in 2005.

The board estimated that the adoption of Measure 41 would result in an estimated $534,000 reduction to the HRCSD for the current biennium and an estimated $2.8 million reduction — the equivalent of 20 teaching positions — in the 2007-09 biennium.

For more information on the board’s reasons for opposing these measures visit www.hoodriver.k12.or.us where HRCSD Resolutions 06-07/06 and 06-07/08 will soon be posted.
