The first step toward doubling the call center staff at the Hood River EMBARQ center took place Thursday.

The center hosted a five-hour job fair, which had a turnout of 60 or more people. Organizers said the turnout included mostly people from Hood River but also from The Dalles and Washington.

The company has committed to adding 60 more positions by next spring in Hood River. The center, located at the company’s Wasco Street Waucoma Center, serves customers in 18 states.

Thursday’s event was the first but most definitely not the last of the hiring events. Manager Jon Krustsch said the center will add 20 associates in November, 20 in December, and another 20 next spring.

“Because of the new EMBARQ philosophy of reducing outsourcing in favor of having more internal agents located within our local service areas … and also because of the strong results achieved by our employees,” Krutsch said, of the reasons for the decision.

At the job fair, applicants were able to test and interview on the same day. The date for the next job fair has not been set yet.
