and writers are invited to submit entries to a variety of essay
and art contests:
•
March 30 deadline
— “What does compassion look like?”
What does compassion mean to you? How
dos it affect the world and what happens when we live without
compassion?
Youth original art, photographs, videos
and poetry will be included in the Seeds of Compassion event in
Seattle in April.
Joan Yasui Emerson is the local
organizer for the event. Deadline is Sunday, March 30. She can

Participants are encouraged to submit
art “to celebrate and explore the relationships, programs and
tools that nurture and empower children, families and
communities to be compassionate members of our society.” Seeds
of Compassion has as its focus, “Planting hope for our children
and our world.”
At the April 11-15 Seattle event,
participants will engage in dialogue with educators, thinkers
and policy-makers. Events are planned for youths, parents and
caregivers, educators and clinicians, business and government,
and community leaders.

May 1 — PROD:
The entire community is invited to participate in PROD’s ”Paws
to Spay/Neuter Essay and Drawing Contest.”
The contest is open to all ages and
prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners.
Drop off or mail your essay or your dog drawing on “Why it’s
important to spay/neuter dogs”, to the Hood River Community
Education office, 1001 Eugene St., Hood River.
Only one entry per category; all entries
must include your full name, age, and phone number.

April 30 — Centennial essays:
As part of the Hood River County
Centennial Celebration, the centennial committee and History
Museum of Hood River County are sponsoring a writing contest.
The theme “Considering Hood River
County: Connect to the Future” invites writers to portray their
thoughts and feelings about what Hood River County will be like
100 years from now.
Connie Nice, Museum coordinator, said,
“One of the purposes of the contest is to archive people’s
thoughts and preserve them for future generations. In addition,
we hope to compile these writings into a book along with other
centennial event photos as a souvenir of our Centennial Year.”
Entries can be poetry or short essays
with the following age categories: category one — third fourth
and fifth grades; category two – sixth, seventh the eight
grades; category three — high school and adults.
Entries must include name, address,
phone number e-mail (if applicable), age and grade, and school
(if a student.)

They can also be delivered to the museum
during open hours (1 to 5 p.m. daily during April).
First place winners will each receive a
prize basket featuring Hood River County products and gifts.
Second and third place winners will receive certificates of
award. First, second and third place entries will be printed in
the Hood River News and will be read at the closing Centennial
event in December.
