Artists and writers invited to submit art and essays

March 28, 2008

Youth and adult artists and writers are invited to submit entries to a variety of essay and art contests:

March 30 deadline — “What does compassion look like?”

What does compassion mean to you? How dos it affect the world and what happens when we live without compassion?

Youth original art, photographs, videos and poetry will be included in the Seeds of Compassion event in Seattle in April.

Joan Yasui Emerson is the local organizer for the event. Deadline is Sunday, March 30. She can be reached at 354-6272.

Participants are encouraged to submit art “to celebrate and explore the relationships, programs and tools that nurture and empower children, families and communities to be compassionate members of our society.” Seeds of Compassion has as its focus, “Planting hope for our children and our world.”

At the April 11-15 Seattle event, participants will engage in dialogue with educators, thinkers and policy-makers. Events are planned for youths, parents and caregivers, educators and clinicians, business and government, and community leaders.

May 1 — PROD: The entire community is invited to participate in PROD’s ”Paws to Spay/Neuter Essay and Drawing Contest.”

The contest is open to all ages and prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners. Drop off or mail your essay or your dog drawing on “Why it’s important to spay/neuter dogs”, to the Hood River Community Education office, 1001 Eugene St., Hood River.

Only one entry per category; all entries must include your full name, age, and phone number.

Call 387-DOGS (3647) for information on PROD — Promoting Responsible Ownership of Dogs.

April 30 — Centennial essays:

As part of the Hood River County Centennial Celebration, the centennial committee and History Museum of Hood River County are sponsoring a writing contest.

The theme “Considering Hood River County: Connect to the Future” invites writers to portray their thoughts and feelings about what Hood River County will be like 100 years from now.

Connie Nice, Museum coordinator, said, “One of the purposes of the contest is to archive people’s thoughts and preserve them for future generations. In addition, we hope to compile these writings into a book along with other centennial event photos as a souvenir of our Centennial Year.”

Entries can be poetry or short essays with the following age categories: category one — third fourth and fifth grades; category two – sixth, seventh the eight grades; category three — high school and adults.

Entries must include name, address, phone number e-mail (if applicable), age and grade, and school (if a student.)

Entries can be mailed to The History Museum P.O. Box 781, Hood River, OR 97-31.

Or, email them to thehistorymuseum@hrecn.net

They can also be delivered to the museum during open hours (1 to 5 p.m. daily during April).

First place winners will each receive a prize basket featuring Hood River County products and gifts. Second and third place winners will receive certificates of award. First, second and third place entries will be printed in the Hood River News and will be read at the closing Centennial event in December.
