Contests help you get
involved at the Fair

If you are looking to get a bit more involved in the Hood River County Fair (July 25-28) than simply strolling through the exhibits this year, try getting involved in one of these special contests:

n The Big Cluck Barbeque Cook-off — Sponsored by the Oregon State Fair, six teams of chicken barbecuers will grill off against one another in hopes of winning the grand prize.

n Cell phone Picture Contest — For young adults ages 12 to 18, the cell phone picture contest is uniting the fair with technology. Pictures of the fair snapped on cell phones can be taken to the PBS booth for development. There will be cash prizes every day and a grand prize will be given out on Saturday.

n Bob’s Red Mill Best Home-Baked Bread contest — Every great baker knows that great bread starts with superb ingredients. Start your recipe with Bob’s Red Mill flours, cereals or grains and you will be on your way to baking a blue-ribbon loaf. First-place winner receives $50 and two five-pound bags of Bob’s Red Mill flour.

n Down Home Favorites Recipe contest — Conjure up memories of special comfort foods passed down from generation to generation and prepare your favorite recipe. The first-place winner will receive an apron embroidered with the FLAV-R-PAC and Santiam logos and a coupon for FLAV-R-PAC or Santiam products.

n Delicious, Nutritious Summer Recipe Challenge — Create your own original snack, salad, main dish, side dish or dessert using your special blend of ingredients and one or more of any of the cheeses produced in Oregon. The first-place winner will receive a “Got Milk?” T-shirt and a coupon for Oregon Dairy products.

n Hermiston Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest — Show us your best seed-spittin’ form with a seed from a plump, sweet and juicy Hermiston watermelon. The first-place winner will receive a Hermiston Watermelon Lover’s championship baseball cap.
