'Monkeying around'
at Circus Camp

Swinging around on the monkey bars isn’t usually considered preparation for a career, but it could be if you were going into the circus business.

Getting kids excited about being in the circus was the goal of the Kids Circus Camp held at May Street Elementary last week.

Kids ages 6 through 11 learned how to juggle, spin a plate, do flips and even walk on a tightrope. Ross Morrison, 8, especially enjoyed doing acrobatics.

“My favorite part is doing handstands, pyramids and stuff like that.”

According to instructor Jo Montgomery, one of the camp’s goals was to make sure everyone found an area where they could excel.

“That is the nice thing about the circus — there are so many different skill areas,” she said.

Montgomery and co-instructor Chuck Johnson are directors at the Seattle School of Acrobatics and New Circus Arts. They were in Hood River for the week just to teach the circus camp, one of many summer camps offered by Hood River County School District’s Community Education program.
