Elks Lodge honors
Fisher, Merriam

November 23, 2007

Katelyn Fisher and Logan Merriam, both seniors at Hood River Valley High School, were chosen as October Students of the Month by the Hood River Elks 1507. Both students were presented with checks for $100 at a recent lodge meeting.

Katelyn Fisher was born and raised in Hood River and is recognized as one of the most hardworking, creative and mature students at HRVHS. She is willing to do whatever it takes to make things work and is a perfect example of a student citizen. She volunteers throughout our community, because she knows it needs to be done not just to build a “resume.”

As part of her community service, Katelyn volunteers at Hospice of the Gorge throughout the year, she participated in the blood drive, Toys for Tots, Christmas Basket Program and also volunteered her time at Hawks Ridge Assisted Living center baking cookies and talking to the residents.

Katelyn was a junior class officer, National Honor Society officer, and is involved in advanced leadership. She helps with track meets, concessions and with all assemblies and major school activities. She played four years of volleyball, one year of softball and was instrumental in working to reform the school lunch program at HRVHS, inputting data for new students’ ID numbers.

While taking advanced courses, Katelyn maintains a 3.977 GPA. She plans to attend University of Portland, majoring in nursing. Katelyn is the daughter of Larry (Steve) and Billie Fisher.

Logan Merriam’s demeanor is quiet but beneath that he has really accomplished a lot. Not only is he an outstanding student, but he’s contributed to the school community through sports, clubs, and specific community activities.

Logan has been the Web master for the local Dynamos Soccer Team since 2004. He put the site on the Web and continues to update and maintain it. He designed an advertisement for substitute positions at Hood River County School District that will be shown in local theaters. While working this past summer, he installed security software on office computers and designed an ad campaign for the Web site.

Logan belongs to Earth Club which attempts to solve important environmental issues, is a Link Crew Leader, National Honor Society member and in FBLA in which he went to state for Web design. He helped with Spring Day, where arranged flower baskets are delivered to the elderly and disabled, and worked on the Spring Fling at Down Manor.

He has played tennis all four years on the varsity tennis team and was awarded Best Doubles Team 2007 with his partner and received the Bob Vaughan Memorial Sportsmanship Award. He is also on the HRVHS Ski Race Team.

Logan maintains a 3.957 GPA and is also taking AP and advanced courses. Logan would like to attended University of Southern California or University of Colorado at Boulder. He is the son of Tom and Robin Merriam.
