Davis, May earn 'Noble' peace awards

November 28, 2007

Carroll Davis and Millie May received the Noble Achievement awards from the Columbia River Fellowship for Peace on Oct. 27.

At the fellowship’s fourth annual dinner, Hagen Hoover-Lauble, of Mount Hood, was presented the Walking Free Youth Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Bob Williams, of Hood River.

About 60 people gathered at Riverside Community Church for the event and savored homemade foods and conversations with old and new friends. During the award presentations, themes of long-time, deep involvement in the local community as well as the global community, humanitarian efforts in crisis situations, education and actions for peace with justice and fairness for all, were heard.

Davis received the Noble Award for his life-long commitment to peace, justice, active democracy and environmental health, beginning with being a conscientious objector medic during the Korean War and a long career as a high school science teacher.

Millie May received the Noble Award for her activities in peace and justice issues, her early membership in the peace fellowship, and as a founding member of Helping Hands Against Domestic Violence.

Hagen Hoover-Lauble received the youth Walking Free Award for his involvement in peace and justice issues over his short years, as well as his work in AmeriCorps in disaster relief in several locations within the United States.

Williams received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his many involvements in peace, justice, active democracy, human rights and environmental issues, beginning with resistance to the American War in Vietnam.

Rev. David Duncombe, who had recently ended a 46-day fast in Washington, D.C., to bring attention and support for a bill in Congress to abolish Third World debt, gave an urgent “Sending Forth,” based on Judeo-Christian values of peace, justice, fairness and ecological sanity.

Past Noble Award recipients include Lucile Wyers, Duncombe, Don Shawe, Sam Dunlap, Irene Aiken, John Lepke and Paula Friedman.

Past Life Time Achievement Awardees include Laurie Cross, Sharon Mounsey and Paul Woolery. Past Walking Free Youth Awardees include Susanna Gabay, Louis DeSitter, Keeley Harding, Anthony Villagomez, Sarah DeSitter and Kory Harding.
