Hood River News Editorial
February 28, 2007
The next two weeks bring ample
opportunity for citizens of Hood River County to become involved in
elected service.
If it is true that all politics are local, now is the time to put
one’s self in a position to have a local impact.
The deadline is March 15 to file for office in spring elections in the
Gorge.
For most positions, the Hood River County administration building, at
Sixth and State, is the place to go (see list below).
For some elected offices from this county, candidates must go to Wasco
County to file: the Columbia Gorge Community College board, positions
three, four, and six, and Region 9 ESD board, zones five and six.
These positions are open only to Hood River County residents, but the
college and ESD serve both Hood River and Wasco counties, and Wasco
County is the county of record, so filing must be done at the
courthouse in The Dalles.
In all cases, term lengths and residence requirements may vary, so
questions about each office should go to county elections officials,
or the agency in question.
Some positions have had people sign up already, but many have no
filings; historically, many open positions unfortunately remain vacant
through election day.
Agencies with open positions in Hood River County are:
* Hood River County Transportation District;
* Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District;
* Odell Rural Fire Protection District;
* Port of Cascade Locks;
* Port of Hood River Position;
* West Side Rural Fire Protection District;
* Hood River School District Board;
* Hood River School District school committees: Pine Grove
Elementary, Hood River Valley High School;
* Ice Fountain Water District;
* Odell Sanitary District;
* Crystal Springs Water District;
* Parkdale Rural Fire Protection District;

Political experience is no prerequisite — just a keen interest in
helping local agencies operate in keeping with the public interest.
These local elections are a prime opportunity for adult residents to
make a difference by providing a community voice for programs and
services affecting our community. |
