Lois D. Talbot

Lois Talbot, 98, died peacefully of natural causes on Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at her Parkhurst House residence, Hood River, Ore. She was born on Aug. 29, 1909, at Waverly, Ill., to W.O. and Cassie Smith Livingstone, both ordained pastors of the Christian Church.

During Lois’ early years, they served at various churches, including Heppner, Ore., before coming to Hood River where her mother was pastor at the Christian Church in town while her father served the congregation at Hood River Valley Christian Church. Lois commented that she had an excuse for being such a “trouble-maker” since she was a double “P.K.”

Lois was a graduate of Hood River High School with the Class of 1927. During this time she was studying piano. She married Ivan F. Talbot in July of 1929 at her parents’ home with her father officiating.

Part of Lois’ music study was with David Campbell of Lewis and Clark College, Portland. She accompanied many performances in this community, including concerts by the Hood River Music Association, and served as pianist/organist for several churches, mainly with Riverside Community Church for more than 20 years.

During this time Lois taught piano in her little studio on 12th Street with former students numbering at least 400 as listed in a little notebook that she kept.

While working in music, Lois owned a small notions store on the Heights, rising very early every morning to accomplish all this. One day she gave up music and the store, took up a paintbrush, and became a well-known artist, painting exclusively in transparent watercolor for which she won many awards and trophies.

During her years as a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon, her paintings were accepted without exception for its traveling exhibits. Lois has had a one-artist show in numerous galleries, including the Galerie de la Cote in Geneva, Switzerland. She also juried many exhibits throughout Oregon and Washington. Her paintings hang in many homes throughout the community and state.

Lois’ other talents included pine-needle weaving, quilting, exquisite seamstressing, fine knitting and crocheting. She was an enthusiastic hiker and often mentioned that her father would take her hiking after his morning services, her greatest pleasure, and she continued to find joy in viewing the mountains throughout her life. She had climbed most of the hills in the Gorge and credited her long life and strength to this exercise. Her friends believe that she is now hiking the hills of heaven with her dad.

In keeping with Lois’ wishes, no services will be held. In the spring her ashes will be scattered on Mount Hood. The remains of her earthly resources will be donated to the Salvation Army.
