Letters - July 8

A caring community
We would like to thank everyone who has been so helpful and caring this month during our sewage “experience.”
From the emergency city Public Works crew, to our State Farm agent, Terry McShane, who came out in the middle of the night, to Joel Olson at SERVPRO who worked throughout the night to mitigate the damage; we have been well taken care of since the first moments.
We are thankful for the staff at the Comfort Suites Hotel who took us in the first week and for all our many friends and relatives who housed us this past month.
We have been overwhelmed with all of the many acts of kindness shown to our family from dinners, to gift certificates, to clothes and toys. These will be used and appreciated during this time when our house is under repairs. We live in a truly generous community.
A special thanks to Terina and Zeke Neal, neighbors extraordinaire, and to all of the Katie’s Way neighbors — suddenly we feel very blessed to be surrounded by you all.

Who wins?
I keep looking at the propaganda flyers all over Cascade Locks and decided to bring up something.
These flyers are in reference to the proposed off-reservation casino. They state that there will be approximately 400 construction jobs available. However, in the compact between the State and the Confederated Warm Springs Indian Tribe, the construction workers must be union.
How many union masons, carpenters, electricians and plumbers, etc., do you know of in this area? Do you suppose that all or most of them will be coming into town from other areas?
Since that is a given, how is that going to benefit our town and our people? I am assuming that the same ratio is going to impact the hiring of the proposed 1,300 casino workers.
Prior to the May public information forum regarding the various impacts that the proposed casino would have upon our area, flyers were posted in Cascade Locks. These flyers were torn down by someone — not once, but twice.
I gather that the other side of the story is neither wanted nor tolerated.
What are those folks afraid of? Could it be the truth? Most of the Mom and Pop businesses would be put out of business by any big casino because of the unfair competition.
That is so sad, as they make up our town personality and employ many residents. Any type of proposed huge construction would necessitate housing for workers who couldn’t afford the $200,000-plus prices.
These changes will put a strain on our facilities and raise taxes. Who is going to be the winner in this greedy proposition?
You get one guess.

A special dog
I would like to address the owner of the vicious dog that attacked my father’s guide dog on May 31.
To Sally, Stephanie or whatever your name is, there are no good words to describe the actions of you and your dog. While I don’t know who you are, you should know you are never far from my thoughts.
I wonder what kind of person allows their animal to jump out of a vehicle and attack a defenseless service dog, to not have it under control at all times, and then to not be absolutely mortified that it was capable of such behavior. What kind of person can bald-face lie and run from the victims and still sleep at night? What if your dog was attacking a small child?
You have no concept of human animal bonding, because if you did, you would know how special the bond is between a service dog and its owner. The service dog is the life-line for its owner. It is their connection to the outside world that you, me and millions of other people take for granted every day.
If you knew how special a bond can be between a human and an animal, you would never have a dog that is capable of behaving the way yours does. My dog sleeps with me, loves me unconditionally, and would defend me to the death. The difference between my dog and yours is that he would NEVER attack another animal or human being, unprovoked. I love my dog with all my heart and soul, just as I love my dad’s dog; they are part of our family.
Because we love our animals, we would never allow them to become something uncontrollable, and a menace to society.
I feel sorry for you and your dog. When you are caught, and it will happen eventually, you run the great risk of your dog being put down for your actions. I think you know this; otherwise, why would you run and hide?
Now to everyone at Rosauers who helped my dad and Keanu, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Also to everyone who has given kind words and wishes for a full recovery, you are very much appreciated.
Keanu is a very special dog, without whose love and guidance my dad would not be the same.

Keep Fourth clean
Did you enjoy the parade? Did you enjoy lighting off fireworks? I did, too.
But I was disturbed by people not picking up candy wrappers and burnt fireworks.
Please clean up the area around you even if it’s not yours.
Let’s live in a clean city.
