Relief to a community’s growing pains can come as simply as the
therapy of expressing an opinion. And city and county citizens have
that opportunity on two fronts.
The city deserves credit for putting forth a set of proposed zoning
changes (details on page A1) to deal with the growing issue of homes
and townhouses that some feel may be too large for their lots, or too
tall for the neighborhood.
The time is right to take a hard look at density, structure/lot
ratios, and building heights.
On Wednesday the planning commission will look at some recommended
changes to the zoning code. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the
municipal courtroom at the junction of Second and State streets.
Meanwhile, the Hood River County Commission is pursuing plans to build
affordable housing units on its State Street lot (see page A1). It’s
one piece in a comprehensive assessment of affordable housing being
done by the county. This and the proposed city zoning changes are
signs that our two largest jurisdictions have the right goals in
sight. In the interest of easing those growing pains, they deserve the
participation and input of the community. |
