In Memory
Flags lowered for Marc Lee

Hood River News Editorial
August 12, 2006

The flags flew at half-staff around Oregon Wednesday for Petty Officer Marc Lee of Hood River.

The flag in lowered position is one of those symbols that communicates something specific: Honoring someone upon his or her death. Gov. Ted Kulongoski announced when the Iraq war began that flags would fly at half-staff for every Oregon war death. Hood River News strives to note the fact each time an Oregon soldier dies.

Wednesday was our turn, as a community and as a state, to pay respects to a fallen soldier. Marc Lee, who attended high school in Oregon, died heroically on Aug. 2. Please turn to page A1 for information on Marc and a memorial service scheduled in Hood River on Aug. 26.

Marc’s family and friends report an extensive outpouring of comfort and support following the tragic news. His mother, Debbie Lee, asked that we pass along her gratitude:
“I just want people to know that I have received so many e-mails and phone calls that I can’t really respond to them all at this time. But my entire family appreciates the thoughts.”
