Hood River News Editorial

The breeze in the park during last week’s Families in the Park event
distributed an aroma that exuded summer: roasting onions from a nearby
grill.
Combined with the murmur of friendly conversation, the aroma instilled
the true senses of summer —
Until the aroma of cigarette smoke was added to the mix.
Hood River City Parks have been designated smoke-free, in a
fanfare-free move by the city.
There are several signs in Jackson Park that politely instruct people
to refrain from smoking, for the health of children and others.
If you smoke but you haven’t seen the signs, now you know. If you
don’t smoke, there may be a way to just as politely ask people near
you not to.
During the well-attended Community Education events, reminders have
been made from the stage about smoking restrictions.
But with the plethora of summer events in the park, including Families
in the Park and Walk-In Movies, this is the perfect time to emphasize
a step that has been taken for the sake of the community’s health, and
ask everyone to comply. |
