Letters - August 26

‘They saved my life’
To the Toll Bridge Park heroes:
On Sunday, Aug. 13, our family was ending a camping trip at Toll Bridge Park when I was stung by a yellow jacket on the lip. I immediately had a severe allergic reaction. My family, knowing I was in trouble, put me in the car for Hood River Hospital. As we were leaving the park, they stopped at the office to call 9-1-1. My son yelled out for help, and was heard. In the picnic area was a nurse and two paramedics. They saved my life. I have no memory of this incident, only what my family and the wonderful E.R. staff at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital has told me. If these true heroes had not been in the park, I would have died.
I don’t know who they are, but our deepest thank-yous to each one of you for being there and responding to the call of duty. Thank you so much. And a special thank-you to the Parkdale ambulance crew. You are all wonderful and greatly appreciated. You are our heroes!

No warrant to this
A Federal District Court judge found the warrantless wiretapping program initiated by George Bush and perpetrated by the NSA, violates both the First and Fourth Amendments to our U.S. Constitution, as well as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Why then are Dick Cheney and Arlen Specter trying to pass a law to legalize the warrantless wiretapping? Why are they wasting the Senate’s time? The law, if passed, will be unconstitutional as well.

Fire grants helpful
Mr. Dave Dockham’s letter to the editor on Aug. 23, titled “This is Security?” makes me wonder if he is willing to increase his taxes to help pay for much-needed fire protection equipment. The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program provides funding to United States Fire Agencies so they can protect citizens like Mr. Dockham. Without funding from the federal government, small fire departments across the United States will not be able to adequately protect the average citizen’s belongings. Times have changed and so have the emergencies these agencies face.
An increased level of preparedness has become a reality with funding from the AFG program. This much-needed funding has provided firefighting clothing, breathing apparatus, vehicles, safety equipment, and firefighting tools to all fire agencies in Hood River County over the past three years.
I am very grateful to the federal government for continued funding of our fire departments. Unless Mr. Dockham is willing to step forward and increase his taxes and support bonds and levies to help increase funding to local fire departments, I suggest he become truly supportive of his firefighters and offer congratulations to a job well done.
Citizens of this County should be very thankful for the level of protection and the dedication of their firefighters, both paid and volunteer. Without these community servants, we would not be able to enjoy the beauty and serenity of this great county
