Hood River News Editorial
September 2, 2006
This is the final weekend of “freedom” for Hood River County school
children.
Classes resume Tuesday at public and private schools in the county,
meaning more and more students will be on the streets, sidewalks, and
crosswalks in our communities.
Please watch out for them.
As the Oregon Department of Transportation notes, motorists in
particular need to watch for the safety of children on foot and on
bicycles, to slow down to 20 miles per hour in school zones and to
yield to crossing guards — as well as pedestrians of any age in
crosswalks.
As you travel, remember that driving just five miles per hour over the
speed limit increases the risk of hitting a pedestrian and increases
the severity of the injury.
Also, remember to use caution around school buses, which will be on
the roads in force starting next week.
Come to a full stop when buses slow to a stop. They will flash their
red lights and extend their retractable stop signs. When the lights
are off and the sign is flat again, the bus will proceed, meaning
children have safely crossed the road. Then, and only then, may cars
proceed.
Early September is a time of eagerness and anticipation. Slow down and
share in those feelings, as one way to help ensure safe passage for
our children this week, and every week. |
