Responders
Even during 9-11 service, proof that
the line of duty is never-ending

Hood River News Editorial
September 13, 2006

Thanks to the responders for two kinds of response.

The Sept. 11 remembrance Monday carried a fitting twist, when fire trucks were called away during the parade preceding the service at Hood River Expo Center.

A ladder truck from The Dalles came to honor the memory of the people who died on Sept. 11. The crew planned to hoist a ladder to form an arc for other vehicles to pass underneath.

But the truck was called away — to a structure fire in The Dalles, and was joined by vehicles from Pine Grove and Parkdale that had also been part of the procession.

Duty called. It was an appropriate, and timely, demonstration of what firefighters, police, and other rescue and response people mean to our society in times of need.

There is no boundary to the sense of gratitude we all feel to the people who gave their lives on Sept. 11. That grateful spirit came forth in Monday’s service.

Also, our thanks to all those active emergency and public service personnel who took time Monday to pay their respects along with a large number of community members.

Our continuing thanks go to the responders for their continued, daily dedication to duty.
