Along with National Preparedness Month, coordinated by American Red
Cross, comes Saturday’s disaster drill positing a terrorist attack in
the Gorge.
This drill (Agencies
plan mock terrorist ‘attack’ drill)
is intended to serve the public, though the average citizen won’t be
directly involved.
And the scenario it concerns, while important to address, is far
different than other kinds of emergencies or crises that require
preparation and awareness by the typical household: flood, damaging
winds, extreme fire, and earthquake.
All these situations (including a terrorist attack) may seem far from
likely, but we still need to be prepared for them.
American Red Cross Columbia River District chapter, at 386-6000, can
point people to all kinds of helpful, even life-saving, information
about how to prepare your home or business in a case of disaster.
National Preparedness Month is now a nationwide coordinated effort
that encourages individuals to become better prepared for disasters
and other emergencies where they live, learn, and work.
The most basic tip, of course, involves the ongoing storage of enough
food, water, first aid, batteries, and other essentials to help a
household sustain itself for 72 hours in case stores and basic
services and utilities are in out of commission.
As Red Cross CEO Kevin Doroski put it, “There are three simple things
each of us can do to be prepared: make a plan, build a kit, and get
trained.”
