Defeat the fences
Looking around at our totally inadequate and cash-strapped attempts at affordable housing, better-than-Third-World health care, public transit, social services, and education, I must find the cockles of my heart warmed by construction of a massive fence to keep out foreigners, massive CIA salaries to torture foreigners (sorry, terrorist suspects), aggressive (“preventive”) war, and other uses of my hard-earned tax dollars. Particularly warming are the votes for these expensive, repressive measures during the High Holy Days, for those of us who are Jewish a time of atonement and seeking forgiveness and communion.
We shall remember, of course, when we vote in November.

Don’t need York
Carol York does not deserve our votes. She definitely does not belong in the Oregon Senate. She has clearly demonstrated how she will act if elected. She failed to take the time to check the truthfulness of an information source. She took hearsay and innuendo and published misinformation in the voter’s pamphlet.
Once she learned she had publicized her misinformation in a statewide publication, did she apologize? No, she made excuses and kept secret her source of the error. She refused to communicate honestly with the voters of Oregon. We do not need such an inattentive, quick-to-act-on-hearsay person in the state legislature.

Smith serves district
Patti Smith has represented District 52 extremely well during the last session as our state legislator.
Patti Smith attends local and civic meetings to listen to the voice of the people she represents. She phones her constituents and returns phone call promptly; she answers e-mails promptly.
As our representative for District 52, voting on legislation that will affect this area is her concern. Patti listens to all sides of all issues and votes with us in mind.
Patti Smith is for lower costs in health care, a more stable funding for public education, and more control of government spending.
Re-elect Patti Smith for State Representative for District 52. She has represented us very well in the past and will continue to do so.

Keep Smith working
In my opinion Patti Smith is doing a very good job of representing her district in the Oregon House. She knows her district, and she knows Salem.
Let’s keep her working for us!

Starrett stands alone
Thank goodness that a Republican operative’s attempt to block Constitution Party’s gubernatorial candidate Mary Starrett from appearing on the Oregon ballot has failed. Those of us for whom the sanctity of life is the single most important issue will finally have a choice, at least in the governor’s race.
It’s too bad the Constitution Party isn’t running any candidates for the legislature in our area. With the Republicans running only pro-choice candidates for the State House (Patty Smith) and State Senate (Carol York), there is no one running that’s willing to represent the pro-life view in Salem.

Smith helps veterans
I am an Army veteran who served in Vietnam and I have joined with Rep. Patti Smith on more than one occasion to advocate for benefits and programs on behalf of area military personnel. I have come to realize in the last six years that Patti is not a politician, she is a working legislator and that makes a big difference in getting the job done right — or at all.
This week Patti was endorsed by the Oregon War Veterans Association Board of Directors because of her continuing dedication to soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines. She was recognized for making herself available for every meeting requested over an issue by association members.
Every Veterans Day and Memorial Day I look at the crowd that has gathered for our local ceremonies to honor those who have stepped forward to protect the freedoms of all American citizens. I always see Patti among the audience, wearing red, white and blue to show her support for our troops and pay respects to our veterans.
Not only does Patti attend Hood River County’s remembrances, she makes as many stops as possible in other locations. This year, Patti will help pass out the newly unveiled Veterans of Oregon Honorable Service medal on Nov. 5, during a ceremony and convoy along Interstate 205, which has been designated the Veterans’ Memorial Highway.
I think that patriotism is something that should be honored — especially in an elected official who has taken an oath to defend our Constitution and the principles upon which it was founded.
I join Greg Warnock of OWVA in urging all District 52 voters to keep Patti Smith in office. We need her experience and leadership.

Time for VanOrman
This year we have the opportunity to vote into office a real advocate for Oregon. For 22 years, Suzanne VanOrman was Executive Director of Mid-Columbia Children’s Council. During that time, Suzanne succeeded in expanding the local Head Start program from approximately 100 children and families to almost 500 children and families and employing over 125 local instructors and assistants.
Her opponent received a failing grade from Stand For Children, the largest statewide organization supporting better funding for schools.
In other areas of importance, Suzanne supports alternative sources of energy for our automobiles and power to our homes. Her opponent voted against bio-fuel legislation.
Regarding land use, Suzanne believes we need to look at laws and regulations and find sensible, workable solutions for these contentious issues. Her opponent voted against creating this task force.
Vote Suzanne VanOrman, House District 52.
