Hood River News Editorial
October 7, 2006
Rubies and emeralds may have been on the mind of the writer of the Old
Testament Proverb, “A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him
that hath it.”
But it is volcanic stone that forms a remarkable gift now to be found
in Hood River. The stone tree (photo, above) on the north lawn by the
Hood River Library is, like all fine public art, what the viewer makes
of it. The basic beauty of the sculpture is the intricate simplicity
of the way the stones are juxtaposed.
Go and have a look for yourself. The Hood River News will carry a full
story in the Oct. 11 Kaleidoscope about the tree, and the work of the
members of the International Stoneworkers Symposium who created this
intriguing sculpture along with other stone works during their
conference here last week.
Our thanks to the tree’s creators. The photo cannot do justice to the
way the sculptors gave proverbial voice to individual stones. |
