Hood River News Editorial
October 14, 2006
Come on in: the water is fine.
Hood River pool will open again on Monday.
This is positive news for regular users of the pool, and they are
many.
The five-week closure, due primarily to replastering of the pool, was
one of the longest in memory.
Doubtless the pool staff will be glad to be back to giving lessons and
standing guard for swimmers, instead of the maintenance tasks they
diligently pursued through September and early October.
What pool patrons might not realize is that during the closure, every
square inch of the facility, and every single piece of equipment was
thoroughly cleaned: every plastic grate lining the pool, every paddle
board, lane divider and life preserver was scrubbed, steam-cleaned,
and sanitized.
The aquatic center is an important and well-run community facility,
home to swimming lessons, kayaking and other aquatic classes, and, of
course, recreational swimming enjoyed by people of all ages.
And then there are the competitions: Please note that the pool will
close to the public Oct. 20-22 for a meet.
But come Monday, Oct. 16, the water invites: The pool re-opens at 8
a.m., and daily open swims are scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m. For more
information, call 386-1303.
Meanwhile, congratulations to the Hood River Valley Parks and
Recreation District, which runs the pool, for two awards received from
the Oregon Parks and Recreation Association last month. The center
received the Design Award for its solar water heating and high
efficiency boiler upgrade, done last summer. The upgrade will allow
the 281,000-gallon pool to be heated entirely by solar energy during
the summer months.
The association also honored Charlie Warren, of Charles Warren
Engineering, with the Private Sector Service Award, for his time and
dedication to improving the quality of life for the District
residents, at the pool and other projects. |
