Ever wanted a bird’s-eye view of a parade?
TV cameras at Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade have it, and so did the
feathered friends released over the Hood River Valley High School
Homecoming parade two weeks ago.
The parade gave students a real chance to spread their creative wings,
in the four class floats, as well as with drama students in their
“Beauty and the Beast” costumes, Phoenix Theater dancers, and band
musicians marching as they played.
Many of those same students gave an impressive fall music concert last
week at Bowe Theater at HRVHS.
“Beauty,” opens Saturday at the high school; given director Mark
Steighner’s remarkable record with big productions such as this, the
community is in for a treat.
Meanwhile, art work by the younger set goes on display in a special
exhibit called “Paw Prints at Columbia Arts Gallery in the Columbia
Arts Center.” The gallery and PROD (Promoting Responsible Ownership of
Dogs) present a series of art events featuring local pets, starting
with this week’s First Friday opening.
Now back to those birds: some people have wondered what became of them
after the parade. They are actually homing pigeons, ranging in color
from pure white to brown, owned by the family of a member of the
junior class, whose float read “We Come In Peace.”
A wonderful sentiment, and humorously delivered with students dressed
up as friendly robots. The birds the students released, with a
flourish, went home right after the parade.
During the parade, Air Guitar, the dance and other Homecoming events,
students at HRVHS displayed teamwork, deep imagination, and
well-engineered flights of fancy — examples of a well-grounded
creative instinct evident in students of all ages in Hood River
County. |
