Letters - Dec. 2

What is wrong with this picture?
A wonderful woman left a great legacy to this town. Finally, we will have our own animal shelter in Hood River County. A place that we know animals will be safe if they are picked up off of the street.
NO WAIT!!!
The county is building the shelter, but it will not be open to the public. There will be no adoption plan, and these animals will be driven to Vancouver, yes, Washington, so that they will hopefully be adopted.
Currently, a group of dedicated VOLUNTEERS from PROD drive the dogs to the shelter on their own time. The arrangement should end when we have our own shelter.
The shelter should be staffed and open to the public for adoptions, RIGHT HERE IN HOOD RIVER!!!
Casey already has her hands full with animal control for the county. As I understand it, PROD would volunteer to work the shelter.
I also understand there are a few things standing in the way.
Are the things standing in the way worth losing a completely volunteer adoption program??
PROD is a responsible, reliable option to just sending OUR problem into Vancouver. I would ask the county to go back to the drawing board and make this work.
