Hood River News Editorial
December 27, 2006
The holiday season rushes by with not
enough time to savor all the thanks, gifts and best wishes of the
season. In this space, we offer a first take at acknowledging
deserving people and organizations and the gifts they deserve for 2006
and needed well-wishes for 2007. There will be more to come on Dec.
30.
* Gold-plated crampons to the Hood River Crag Rats and their
families for the massive support they gave to the search for the
climbers.
* Badges of honor to the Hood River County Sheriff’s Department
for going way above and beyond the call of duty in the search.
* A brick — as in solid as one — at the Hood River County
library, imprinted with the name of Chris Guertin, the sheriff’s
deputy who devoted himself to coordinating the search.
* A sturdy pail and shovel to the Port of Hood River Commission
and staff for figuring out the toughest beach test in years: How to
work with the feds to figure out a fix for the delta of debris where
the Hood meets the Columbia.
* To new County Commissioner Ron Rivers and Barbara Briggs:
Nameplates printed on both sides for those days when, as any public
servant can attest, information flies so fast you almost forget your
own name.
* A clean plate at the political round table for Cascade Locks’
new crew of leaders: Mayor Roger Freeborn and council members Tom
Cramblett, Randy Holmstrom, Kerri Jo Osbourn, Tom Brazille and Darrell
Driver.
* A Santa-autographed apron for Sheila Shearer, who with a host
of fellow volunteers, put on another successful free Christmas meal
for the community on Dec. 24.
* A picture of kids in a classroom, to the folks negotiating a
new teachers’ contract for the Hood River County School District. As
mediation resumes next month, copies of the photo should be placed in
front of the negotiators, and kept there for constant reference as to
what is really at stake. |
