classes begin

 

The new year brings a fresh chance to take advantage of Hood River County School District’s Community Education classes. Below are classes in the next couple of weeks that are aimed at youngsters:

Saturday, Jan. 5

• Pizza With Pizzazz — This kids’ cooking class will have children in grades K-5 making dough from scratch and creating the perfect pizza. Taught by Janet Davis at Hood River Middle School, room 101, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Fee: $12.

• Kenpo Karate for Kids — This art is a combination of Chinese Kenpo, Judo, Ju-Jitsu, Krav-maga and Aikido. It is an art of self-defense that enables one to defeat one’s opponent by administering a strike or kick. Open to ages 5-13. Taught Saturdays and/or Sundays beginning Jan. 5, by Shannon Crane at May Street Elementary in the cafeteria, 9-10 a.m. Fee: $15 per month/day.

• I Am Special — This class will focus on individuality and what makes each person unique and special. Children ages 3-6 will make “I Am Special” dolls, play body bingo, make melted handprints and have a story time from the book “I Like Me.” Taught by Janet Davis at Our Children’s Place from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee is $10.

Tuesday, Jan. 8

• Show Stoppers — Hood River Valley Playhouse Show Stoppers is a traveling children’s performing group under the direction of Cara Vance. The group will learn songs and dances for a Christmas show, which will be performed for various community events in December. Open to all ages. Tuesdays from Jan. 8-April 15 at Mount Hood Town Hall, 4-5 p.m. Fee: $110.

• Hola Crayola Spanish Class — This is a small group language class designed to introduce Spanish to children ages 4-6. Songs, experiments, art projects, practice handwriting and letter recognition will make this a fun, unique and educational class. Taught by Jennifer Wilson at Rio Columbia Language Studio, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-2 p.m. Fee: $15 per session.

• German For Kids —Children ages 4-6 will explore the German language, music and culture — and simply have fun. You can start at any time. Taught by Helga Burkhardt at Rio Columbia Language Studio Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Fee: $15 per session.

Wednesday, Jan. 9

• Intro to Rock Climbing for Kids (ages 6-10) — Learn to rock climb in the comfort of indoors on the eight-station artificial climbing wall. Basic rope climbing, knots, rope safety and bouldering. The fee includes your yearly membership for the open wall climb that is held every Tuesday night from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Parents are required to attend and work with their child. Taught by John and Lisa Rust at Hood River Middle School’s old gym, from 6:30-8 p.m. Fee: $15.

Thursday, Jan. 10

• Yoga Kids — Kids ages 3-10 learn the value of balancing play, or “with” time and “within” time. There is also an adult yoga class at this time that parents can take in the other studios — a great way to move, renew and relax as a family. Taught by the staff at Flow Yoga, Thursdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and/or Saturdays from 8-9 a.m. Fee is $60 for eight sessions.

• Intro to Rock Climbing (ages 11-adult) — Learn to rock climb in the comfort of indoors on the new eight-station artificial climbing wall. Basic rope climbing, knots, rope handling, belaying, signals and movements will be taught. All equipment will be provided. Taught by John and Lisa Rust at Hood River Middle School’s old gym, 6:30-8 p.m. Fee: $15 (includes annual membership for the open wall sessions Tuesday evenings).
