Jewel packed fruit for many years and worked

her beloved family. She also found sewing, craft projects,

Wilma ‘Juanita’ Mays
Wilma J. Mays, known to all as Juanita, was
born May 16, 1924, in Forsyth, Mo., and passed away on April 2,
2008, in Vancouver, Wash.
She was the youngest of three daughters born
to Dee and Rosie Dunn.
Her family left Missouri when she was just a
toddler and traveled for several years before finally settling
in the Hood River valley where Juanita and her sisters, Lenore
and Thelma, finished their schooling.
She met her husband, Owen, when she was 16
and became a World War II bride at the age of 17. She and Owen
had a rocky start due to their separation but once the war was
over, they created their home in Hood River and raised two
daughters, Marilyn and Patricia.
Juanita worked in the fruit industry for more
than 25 years and had many friends at the AGA and later the
Diamond Fruit Packing Plant.
When not working, Juanita and Owen loved to
go fishing and camping, and were avid rock hounds. They spent
many happy hours together walking the banks of the Columbia or
the sandy Oregon beaches looking for the perfect fishing hole or
another agate to add to their collection.
Though Owen passed in 1993, Juanita remained
married to him her entire life and was convinced that one day
she would join him on the banks of a river in heaven.
Juanita is survived by her daughters, Marilyn
and Patricia, and two grandchildren Zachary and Anna.
The family is bringing her home this coming
weekend. A memorial is planned for 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 10,
at the Odell United Methodist Church, where Juanita was a member
for more than 40 years.
Remembrances should be addressed to the
Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
