Irene was raised and educated in Hood River, graduating from Hood River High School. She attended Simpson College and graduated from Western Washington State University in Bellingham with a degree in elementary education.

She married the Rev. James Robert Woodley Sept. 7, 1948. While they were married, he served churches in Elma, McCleary, Mabton, and Walla Walla, Wash., and Wamic and Bend, Ore.; and she taught in those communities. They had one daughter, Priscilla. They were married 14 years before he died suddenly on Aug. 31, 1963.

Irene married Paul Brooks on Dec. 23, 1964. They resided in Mosier where Paul owned and operated an orchard and she taught first grade at Mosier School. For many years they lived in a longtime Brooks family home that is now the Cherry Hill B&B. They were members of the Mosier Grange and attended the Christian Church in Mosier and The Dalles.

Paul died on July 22, 2007, after 42 years of marriage.

Irene enjoyed reading, sewing, needlework, flower gardening, music, and church and community activities. She was a wonderful hostess who loved to have house guests, give dinner parties and celebrate holidays with festive meals for family and friends.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Priscilla Ordway Woodley, of Beaverton, Ore.; special niece-in-law, Shirley Bagge, and her husband, Rob, of Mosier, Ore., along with their children, Lorraine and Nic Sherman, and their daughter, Katie Brooks, of Independence, Ore., and Geneva and Jeremy Nygren and their children, Anna and Erik, of Aviano, Italy; and many nieces and nephews.

Hazel Marsh

Hazel Kelly Marsh, age 90, died Feb. 14, 2009, at Providence Brookside Manor in Hood River, Ore.

A graveside service will be held at the Pine Grove Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19, with a reception to follow at the Pine Grove Grange. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 4-6 p.m. at the Tribute Center.

Hazel Kelly Marsh was born April 28, 1918, In Hood River. She was the youngest of four children born to Joe and Clara (Hunt) Jarvis, joining siblings Gerald, Myrtle and Willard.

Hazel grew up in Pine Grove and attended Hood River High School, graduating in 1937. She married Scott Kelly in December 1938, and a daughter, Joni, was born several years later. Soon after Scott returned from World War II, they bought the Jarvis orchard.

Hazel was a homemaker, but like many farmers’ wives, packed fruit in the fall for Moore and Pooley orchards. In the mid-1950s she became a receptionist for both the Hood River Hospital and Apple Growers Association.

Scott and Hazel divorced in the early 1970s, and Hazel moved to Lincoln City by the beach she always loved. She later married John Marsh and they enjoyed trips to Hawaii, golfing and jamming music together.

Kelly, as she liked to be called, was also a knitter, and supplied the family and neighbors with many beautiful socks which she was always noted for. Leaving the coast was not an option after John’s death, as she loved her home overlooking the ocean, and had many seagulls and raccoons depending on her for their next meal. Taking a fall in 2006 left her unable to return to her house, and she has since called Brookside Manor home.

Kelly loved everyone at Brookside and loved being close to her family. Kelly had another bad fall nearly three weeks ago, and although the surgery was successful, at age 90 she felt she was too old and tired to fight back. She passed away on Feb. 14, with family at her side.

She is survived by her daughter, Joni Walker, and special son-in-law, Don, of Hood River; four grandchildren: Scott Walker and Liz, of Tillamook, Ore., Debbie Ketchum and Greg, of Stayton, Ore., Chris Walker and Elaine, and Eric Walker and Trisha, of Hood River; 10 great-grandchildren: Jessica, Sam, Weston, Rachel, Cody, Kam, Abby and Johanna Walker, and Kelly Ketchum and Keshia Harris.

Also surviving Kelly are her niece, Marion Reed; nephew, Rocky Jarvis, and cousins Martha Ann Weber, of Odell, Dick Jarvis and Josephine Anderson.

Contributions may be made to Heart of Hospice or Providence Hospital Foundation for Brookside Manor in Kelly’s name in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; (541) 386-1000. Kathryn Wollam

Kathryn Lee Wollam died at the age of 70, of serious lung and heart problems that came on rather suddenly. She died Feb. 16, 2009, at her home in Hood River, Ore., surrounded by her loved ones.

A service is planned for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, at the Hood River Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 18th and May streets. Bishop Gary Hornbeck, a family friend, will conduct. Graveside rites will follow at Idlewilde Cemetery. Please contact Anderson’s Tribute Center for viewing and visitation times.

She was born Kathryn Lee Halley on March 21, 1938, to Lester Lee and Fyrn Kathryn (Miller) Halley in Deepwater, Mo.

The Halleys moved here before Kathy was 5 years old. She went to the Hood River schools, graduating from Hood River High School in 1956.

Following graduation, she went to work for Diamond Fruit as a packer.

She met the love of her life, Bob Wollam, and they were married June 21, 1958, in Stevenson, Wash. They built their home on Belmont Drive in Hood River. Kathy went to work at Duckwall’s where she was a packer and supervisor. She retired after 35 years with them.

One night, she was coming home from work when a big cow appeared in the middle of the road. It went right through the windshield on the passenger’s side. The cow wasn’t hurt. She pulled her head out, shook herself and walked away. Kathy was MAD.

She enjoyed keeping a journal for years. This helped the family sort out events many times. She liked doing craft projects, reading, including the Bible, shopping, and spending time with the family. She told her sister, Nelma, that she, Kathy, was the shopper and Nelma was the buyer.

In June 1993 the Wollams bought a place in Pine Hollow, Ore., right on the lake. The family spent many weekends there through the years until it was sold recently. They all miss the peace they felt there, the family time together, and the water activities.

In 2002 Kathy needed a kidney transplant. The match was found miraculously with her adopted son, Jeff, who willingly made the donation. It was a complete success.

Bob and Kathy both joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 18, 2004. This changed their lives. They remained strong members. She was a very loving person who would help in any way possible. She will be missed by her many friends and family.

Kathy was predeceased by her parents and Joni Lee Wollam, an infant daughter.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bob Wollam, of Hood River; her daughter, Jeannie (and Jeff) Abbe, of Portland, Ore.; a son, Jeff Wollam, of Vancouver, Wash.; a granddaughter, Joni Ball, of Portland, Ore.; a grandson, Shawn Ball, of Hood River; a sister, Nelma (and Dick) Minard, of Seattle, Wash.; and a sister-in-law, Velma (and Jesse) Villafana, of Hood River. She also leaves a beloved dog, Ziggy.

Contributions can be made to Heart of Hospice and sent in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
