Patricia Barnes-Best
Patricia Leone Barnes-Best, a Hood
River, Ore., resident, died
Feb. 18, 2009, at her residence surrounded by her
family. She was 76 years of age.
A Celebration of Life service will be
held on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at 2
p.m. at Anderson’s
Tribute Center,
her son-in-law and pastor, Joe Castilla, will officiate.
Patricia was born Feb. 1, 1933,
in Yakima, Wash.,
to James and Edith (Berriman) Barnes. She was raised there with
five sisters. She met and married Ken Holmes and had six
children. They moved to Vermillion, S.D., where they lived and
raised their children. They moved back to
Yakima,
Wash., and then to
Hood
River.
Ken and Pat later divorced and Pat
married Glenn E. Best in 1980, where a whirlwind 30-year romance
bloomed.
Glenn and Pat were inseparable. Patricia
loved fishing, camping and embroidery. She loved to watch and
feed birds of all kinds, whether in their back yard, down by the
river, or at the coast. Pat and Glenn never wasted a moment, and
were always happy and on to the next trip. They traveled
Oregon, Washington
and most of the Northwest and
Canada
in their camper.
Patricia loved to laugh and spend time
with family and friends. She had a laugh like no other, and she
loved to hum a tune that made her seem so content.
In her younger days she rode horses and
rode in the local barrel-racing circuit. She even helped fly
Glenn’s Cessna plane one sunny day. She lived life large with
happiness in her heart, and always had kind words for everyone.
She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer
which she fought diligently for 17 years. When she passed in her
sleep, she had just celebrated her 76th birthday, which was
attended by all her children.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn
Best; seven children and their spouses: Conni and Howard
Andersen, of Underwood, Wash.,
Chris and Joe Castilla, of Canby,
Ore., Jim and Jill Holmes, Damon and
Kelly Holmes and Eric and Laurie Holmes, all of
Hood River, Ore.,
Lisa Holmes-Bentz, of Canby,
Ore., and stepdaughter Robin and Mark
Smith, of Cornelius, Ore. Fifteen grandchildren and 12
great-grandchildren also survive.
Pat’s family suggests that memorial
contributions be made in her memory to Heart of Hospice and sent
care of Anderson’s
Tribute Center.
