‘Birdsong’ concert June 17

Folk musician Jeni Foster will play a free concert at the Columbia Center for the Arts on Wednesday, June 17, at 7:30 p.m.

In “BirdSong: Birds as Metaphor in American Folk Music,” Foster explores the symbolism of birds within the heritage of American folk music. She weaves traditional and contemporary folk songs throughout her narrative to expand upon the stories of everyday Americans and well-known moments in our country’s history.

Audience participation enhances the experience as Foster, who has had the family nickname of “Jeniwren” since her childhood, invites audience members to sing along on the choruses of songs chosen to illustrate her program.

Music at Maryhill Winery

Maryhill Winery hosts free live music on the patio from 1-5 p.m.

 On Saturday, June 20, it’s Joanie’s Jazz Trio.  “Pop hits, swing tunes, and jazz compositions from the ’30s through the ’60s are lovingly performed in a variety of tempos by these three skilled musicians.

 Joanie Lamoreaux on flute, percussion and vocals, Michael Lamoreaux on keyboard and Charlie Escher on bass. Their enthusiastic renditions of the standards have made them a favorite throughout the Columbia Gorge.”

On Sunday, June 21, it’s Father’s Day and resident pianist Sandee Marshall will be providing the music.

Mark Daly at Double Mountain

Tilly Jam member Mark Daly will be performing a solo show at Double Mountain Brewery on Thursday, June 11, from 7-9 p.m. Daly will be playing guitar and octave mandolin.

New Parent benefit June 26

A benefit dinner celebrating the 20th anniversary of New Parent Services will be held at Divots Restaurant at Indian Creek Golf Course on Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m.

 Dance music will be provided by Larkspur.

Come dressed in your funkiest hat to compete in the hat contest and celebrate the “Hats Off to New Parent Services” theme.

Hawaiian BBQ June 20-21

Pheasant Valley Winery will be featuring an authentic Hawaiian barbecue on the weekend of June 20-21, during the Fruit Loop Wine Celebration.

 Sample award-winning wines including 2007 McDuffee Chardonnay and 2005 Columbia Gorge Pinot Noir.

Karaoke night at Elks Lodge

The Hood River Elks Lodge will host karaoke with Bill Hornibrook on Friday, June 12, starting at 6:30 p.m. Grab the mic and sing your favorite song!

 On Saturday, June 20, don’t miss the debut of singer-songwriter Mark Williams, starting at 7:30 p.m. Mark Williams returns Saturday, June 27.

Eric Taylor plays June 18

Eric Taylor, one of today's top performing songwriters, returns to The Dalles Civic Auditorium for a concert on Thursday, June 18. Music starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $15.

 Taylor’s new CD “Hollywood Pocketknife” has been hailed by Sing Out! magazine as “authoritative singing.....ranking among his finest works.”

Moo Got at River City

On Friday, June 12, MOO GOT 2 returns to the River City Saloon. This California group is on the rise. Check out their groovy music at www.myspace.com/moogot2.

 Finally, on Sunday, June 14, the River City Saloon and the Naked Winery will hold an anniversary street party from noon until midnight, featuring Sunderland, Speedqueen Underground, Tranquil Destination and The Quick and Easy Boys.

Mark Chesnutt plays The Dalles

Country music artist Mark Chesnutt is coming to the Granada Theatre in The Dalles on Saturday, June 20. Music starts at 8 p.m. and tickets for general seating are $50.

 With five gold albums and 12 number one hits, Chesnutt is celebrating a 20-year career in the country music industry. Chesnutt’s new CD “Rollin with the Flow” features the listener-requested single “She Never Got Me Over You.”

Brata Band at Thirsty Woman

On Friday, June 12, it’s a special performance from the Bram Brata Tri Cities Steel Band at the Thirsty Woman, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Music Mondays at Solstice

Sternwheeler Days June 27-28

A month of music at Everybody’s

Acoustic folk-bluegrass band Deadwood Revival returns to Everybody’s Brewing on Friday, June 12. The band has a new CD and actively tours the Northwest.

 Music starts at 8:30 p.m. and there is no cover charge. Future shows include: June 5: Pat Driver and the Collective - featuring 15 members of the White Salmon Jazz Band; June 19: Floating Glass Balls — Beachgrass band from Lincoln City; June 27: 4ontheFloor Bluegrass.

Country Dance June 13

The Second Saturday Country Dance is scheduled for June 13, starting at 7 p.m. at the Rockford Grange.

The caller will be Bill Martin, a well-known dance caller  from Portland. The band will be The Fiddleheads, a nine-piece string band from the Columbia Gorge with seven fiddles, one bass and one guitar.

 Dance lessons will begin at 7 p.m. All ages welcome and no partner is required. Enjoy an evening of country squares, contras, circle dances and a few waltzes.

 Admission is $6 for members, $7 for non-members.

  

Skamania Arts concert series

A six concert series will bring regional and national acts to different venues in the Gorge and will run from April to September. The August concert will feature Janis Ian, and this will be her only Portland area appearance.

Free Shakespeare in the Gorge

The Portland Actors Ensemble presents a production of “King Lear” on Saturday, June 20, at the Stonehenge War Memorial in Goldendale, Wash.

 The play starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

‘Talking With’ auditions June 14

Auditions for the CAST production of “Talking With....” will be held June 14 at 1 p.m. and June 15 and 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Columbia Center for the Arts.

 “Talking With....” by Jane Martin, is a study of love, loneliness and obsession mixed liberally with humor. Monologues by 11 different women run the gamut from a young “stressed out” auditioning actress, a woman in her 30s who’s recently lost her mother, to an elderly lady who aspires to live in a McDonald’s restaurant.

A wide range of roles are available for women ages 16 to 75. Anyone who wishes to review a script prior to the auditions should contact the director, Glenn Harris, at 386-5089.

 Rehearsals will begin at the end of July with the play opening on Oct. 8.
