‘King of California’ June 24

The monthly film series at Columbia Center for the Arts continues with “King of California” on Wednesday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m.

A quirky and touching comedy about a mature teenager and her manic-depressive father, “King of California” is a tale of familial relations and treasure hunting.

The film stars Michael Douglas as Charlie, a troubled musician who has just been released from a mental hospital. He returns home to live with his 16-year-old daughter, Miranda, who is not exactly thrilled to have him back.

Author Gaston at Balch Hotel June 26

The Balch Hotel in Dufur presents an author reading and book signing with Bibi Gaston on Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. Gaston will be reading from her release “The Loveliest Woman in America.”

Shortly after her father’s death in 2001, Bibi Gaston received a mysterious cardboard box filled with more than 1,500 pages of a diary that belonged to her grandmother, Rosamond Pinchot, a woman born into one of the country's most illustrious political families.

 Dubbed “the loveliest woman in America,” Rosamond was an acclaimed actress, socialite, and sportswoman. Yet, only 10 short years later her life came to a shocking end by suicide, setting in motion decades of confusion and sibling rivalry.

‘Money Fix’ screens June 25

The Columbia Gorge Earth Center’s ongoing film and lecture series continues on Thursday, June 25, with a screening of “The Money Fix,” at the White Salmon Library.

 The film, featured in the 2009 Big Sky Film Festival, is a documentary on how money can be perceived in the world’s economy.

Blue Tattoo at The Vault June 26

There’s local and regional music at The Vault in The Dalles coming up.

 On Friday, June 19, Hookah Stew returns with powerpop, soul and more. On Saturday, June 20, Pristine Blue is on stage with country and rock.

 Next week, it’s classic rock from Blue Tattoo on June 26, and on June 27, it’s Crazy Train, the ultimate Ozzy Osbourne tribute band.

 Future shows include: July 3: Ocean 503 R&B, soul and funk; July 4: DJ Hip Hop.

RJ Ballard at Saturday Market

Join the world of RJ Ballard at the Hood River Saturday Market on June 20.

 Ballard, a musician and cartoonist/humorist says, “the forward slash works well for me because I’m not always certain where one begins and the other ends.”

Ballard will entertain you with steel guitar and vocals from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

McTuff, more at River City

 On Saturday, June 20, The Holiday Friends will be providing the music for the Slider Jam Solstice party. This event is being brought to you by Second Wind and Slingshot kiteboards.

Brews, Blues & BBQs June 27

Enjoy microbrews and wines from the Pacific Northwest, tasty barbecue and live blues bands on the banks of the Columbia River at Teo Park in Stevenson, Wash., on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 10 p.m.

This year’s blues lineup: Tess Barr Blues Band, The Strangetones and Too Slim and the Taildraggers.

Sternwheeler Days June 27-28

The Columbia Gorge Lions Club presents the annual Sternwheeler Days celebration June 27-28 in Cascade Locks. The event will feature local arts and crafts, the Mountain Man encampment, and a full schedule of family entertainment.

 Bands include Kathy Boyd and Phoenix Rising on Saturday and Perfect Bedlam on Sunday. The Columbia Gorge Yacht Club will have a parade of boats up the river from the Bridge of the Gods to the Cascade Locks Marina at noon, following the downtown parade.

‘Destination’ plays Double Mtn. June 20

There’s local music this week at Double Mountain Brewery.

 On Saturday, June 20, it’s the acoustic-electric hard folk-rock groove of Tranquil Destination. Catch these guys for their going-away party as they head down the road and move to Portland.

Summer solstice party June 21

Sosltice Cafe will be celebrating the summer solstice and Father's Day Sunday, June 21, with belly dancing and Brazilian dancing with music from Bola Preta. The party starts at 5:30 p.m.

Victoria Vox at The Pines June 24

Mya-Moe Ukuleles presents singer/songwriter Victoria Vox at The Pines Tasting Room on Wednesday, June 24, from 6-8 p.m.

What makes Victoria's music so special is not just the clever incorporation of the ukulele, but the lost art of genuinely great songwriting.

Mark Chesnutt plays The Dalles June 20

Country music artist Mark Chesnutt is coming to the Granada Theatre in The Dalles on Saturday, June 20. Music starts at 8 p.m. and tickets for general seating are $50.

 With five gold albums and 12 number-one hits, Chesnutt is celebrating a 20-year career in the country music industry. Chesnutt’s new CD “Rollin with the Flow” features the listener-requested single “She Never Got Me Over You.”

Free Shakespeare in the Gorge June 20

The Portland Actors Ensemble presents a production of “King Lear” on Saturday, June 20, at the Stonehenge War Memorial in Goldendale, Wash.

The play starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

New Parent benefit June 26

A benefit dinner celebrating the 20th anniversary of New Parent Services will be held at Divots Restaurant at Indian Creek Golf Course on Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m.

Dance music will be provided by Larkspur. Come dressed in your funkiest hat to compete in the hat contest and celebrate the “Hats Off to New Parent Services” theme.

Pied Piper, Thomas in town June 19-22, 26-28

Steve Gryb, hailing from Florida, brings his Pied Piper Percussion Show to the Mt. Hood Railroad’s Day Out with Thomas, scheduled for June 19-22 and June 26-28.

This interactive music show, included in the admission price, features hundreds of different percussion instruments that can be played to popular songs and rhythms.

Music shows are at 10:30 a.m., noon, and 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m.

Mark Williams at Naked Winery

Naked Winery features local and regional music this week.

 On Friday, June 19, it’s a double bill with Mark Williams from 4-6 p.m. and “America’s Most Wanted” from 8-11 p.m. On Saturday, June 20, it’s beachgrass from “Floating Glass Balls” from 8-11 p.m.

On Father’s Day, June 21, it’s Joanies Jazz Trio from 4-7 p.m. On Mondays, don’t miss Naked Winery’s Open Mic Jam, starting at 6 p.m.

Music at Maryhill Winery June 20-21

Maryhill Winery hosts free live music on the patio from 1-5 p.m.

On Saturday, June 20, it’s Joanie’s Jazz Trio.  “Pop hits, swing tunes, and jazz compositions from the ’30s through the ’60s are lovingly performed in a variety of tempos by these three skilled musicians. Joanie Lamoreaux on flute, percussion and vocals, Michael Lamoreaux on keyboard and Charlie Escher on bass. Their enthusiastic renditions of the standards have made them a favorite throughout the Columbia Gorge.”

On Sunday, June 21, it’s Father’s Day and resident pianist Sandee Marshall will be providing the music.

Tom Grant moves to Thursdays June 25

The Tom Grant Band will be moving their monthly show at CEBU Lounge to Thursdays, starting June 25. The jazz band will feature pianist Tom Grant and special guests.

Concerts in the Park June 20

A free Concerts in the Park music series starts June 20 in The Dalles City Park on Union Street. All shows are free and family-friendly — bring lawn chairs and blankets. Music starts at 6 p.m.

June 20: Jackstraw (Bluegrass); July 4: Bohemian Social Club — all-star Gorge band with swing and blues to celebrate Independence Day; July 18: Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh (folk); Aug. 1: Linda Hornbuckle and Janice Scroggins (gospel blues); Aug. 15: Gorge Winds 50 piece concert band; Aug. 29: Circled by Hounds (Traditional Irish).

Skamania Arts concert series

A six-concert series will bring regional and national acts to different venues in the Gorge and will run from April to September.

The August concert will feature Janis Ian, and this will be her only Portland area appearance.
