Lavender Daze July 11-12

Hood River Lavender Farms will host its fifth annual Lavender Daze festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 11-12. The festival will feature more than 20 arts and craft vendors, barbecue from Charburger, on-site massage, Cathedral Ridge wines and games and activities for the kids.

Admission to the grounds is free, and there will be music on the main stage both days.

‘tick, tick…BOOM!’ opens July 9

CAST presents a production of “tick…tick…BOOM!” at the Columbia Center for the Arts.

The play tells the story of Jon, a young New York composer who is on the verge of being discovered, but is still having doubts and insecurities about his future.

Together with Susan, his girlfriend, and Michael, his oldest friend, Jon ponders what lies beyond the decisions they all must face. Along the way there are songs about relationships, the tribulations of urban life, the challenges of growing older, and the need for friendships and connections.

The show runs July 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 at 7:30 p.m. and July 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. in the theater at Columbia Center for the Arts, 215 Cascade Ave. in Hood River.

Maryhill celebrates July 4

It’s a Red, White and Blue celebration at Maryhill Winery July Fourth weekend. Taste some award-winning wines, enjoy a fabulous view of the Columbia River Gorge while you picnic on the arbor. There will be family activities and live music all three days from 1-5 p.m.

Singer songwriter Bob Connolly will be at the Hood River Hotel on Friday, June 26, with a solo show.

Joel Valle plays Stonehedge

There’s music at Stonehedge Gardens as the patio opens for the summer.

On Wednesday, June 24, it’s music from guitarist Joel Valle, with “coffee house renditions of rock’s greatest songs in an easy-listening family format.” The Surf and Turf buffet menu is available.

Ashana’s ‘Healing Music’ June 24

On Wednesday, June 24, Ashana’s Heart-to-Heart Tour comes to HeartGate Sanctuary in Hood River to offer a concert of transcendent music, featuring the luminous sound of crystal singing bowls accompanied by keyboards, percussion and vocals in a multi-dimensional program of sacred chant, song and mantra.

 Music starts at 8 p.m. and reserved tickets range from $15-20.

SawCordius plays June 27

Local folk band SawCordius will bring its “Illegitimate Music for Discerning Audiences” show to The Gorge White House on Saturday, June 27, from 2-5 p.m.

There is no admission charge. Music will be on the patio and wine tasting will be available.

Reggae artist Henry Turner returns to Trillium July 4

Internationally known recording artist Henry Turner Jr. and his band Flavor will be bringing their unique brand of Louisiana reggae/funk music to the Trillium Cafe July 4 weekend.

With several hit singles and movie soundtrack credits to his name, Henry Turner has played at major U.S. festivals including Bob Marley Fest, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Reggae on the Mississippi and the International Heritage Celebration.

CGRA Opening Day June 27

The Columbia Gorge Racing Association will have an opening day celebration Saturday, June 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cascade Locks Marine Park.

Spend the day with the CGRA team for a fun day of sailing activities including sailboat rides for the whole family, informal races and barbecue.

Meet some new friends and find out what CGRA is doing to bring world-class sailing to the Gorge.

 

Music scheduled at Fort Dalles

The Fort Dalles Museum presents summer concerts on the fourth Sunday of each month starting June 28. Music is from 4-6 p.m. and admission is free.

June 28: SawCordius — Listen and dance to music made on unusual instruments — musical saws, accordion, mandolin, a rare trumpet-fiddle and more. Polkas, reels, old-time show tunes — this entertaining duo does it all!

July 26: Victor Johnson — Victor Johnson is an award-winning musician from The Dalles who specializes in traditional acoustic music and storytelling for kids and families. His CDs have won Parent’s Choice Silver Awards.

 Aug. 23 — Rich & Connie Dunnington - Rich and Connie Dunnington perform folk favorites from the 1800s on violin and guitar.

Tom Grant, Tilly Jam at CEBU

The Tom Grant Band will be moving its monthly show at CEBU Lounge to Thursdays, starting June 25. The jazz band will feature pianist Tom Grant and special guests.

Music is from 8-11 p.m.

Tilly Jam will play the CEBU Lounge at the Hood River Inn on Friday, June 26, from 9 p.m. to midnight. Join this local band for dancing and a full bar menu.

 ‘King of California’ June 24

The monthly film series at Columbia Center for the Arts continues with “King of California” on Wednesday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m.

A quirky and touching comedy about a mature teenager and her manic-depressive father, “King of California” is a tale of familial relations and treasure hunting. The film stars Michael Douglas as Charlie, a troubled musician who has just been released from a mental hospital. He returns home to live with his 16-year-old daughter, Miranda, who is not exactly thrilled to have him back.

New Parent benefit June 26

A benefit dinner celebrating the 20th anniversary of New Parent Services will be held at Divots Restaurant at Indian Creek Golf Course on Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. Dance music will be provided by Larkspur.

Come dressed in your funkiest hat to compete in the hat contest and celebrate the “Hats Off to New Parent Services” theme.

Victoria Vox at The Pines June 24

Mya-Moe Ukuleles presents singer/songwriter Victoria Vox at The Pines Tasting Room on Wednesday, June 24, from 6-8 p.m.

Vox’s song “C'est Noye,” from her latest CD “Chameleon,” won first place at the 2009 International Acoustic Music Awards.

“What makes Victoria's music so special is not just the clever incorporation of the ukulele, but the lost art of genuinely great songwriting.”

‘Cinderella Goes Disco’ June 27

Encore Performing Arts presents “Cinderella Goes Disco” and “Little Red and the Hoods,” at the Marina Park in Hood River on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m.

These audience-participation plays will feature a magic act from Calen Morelli during the intermission lunch break.

Admission is free, and lunch purchases will benefit Boy Scout Troop 352.

Brews, Blues & BBQs June 27

Enjoy microbrews and wines from the Pacific Northwest, tasty barbecue and live blues bands on the banks of the Columbia River at Teo Park in Stevenson, Wash., on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 10 p.m.

This year’s blues lineup: Tess Barr Blues Band, The Strangetones and Too Slim and the Taildraggers.

Author Gaston at Balch Hotel

The Balch Hotel in Dufur presents an author reading and book signing with Bibi Gaston on Friday, June 26, at 6 p.m. Gaston will be reading from her release “The Loveliest Woman in America.”

Shortly after her father’s death in 2001, Bibi Gaston received a mysterious cardboard box filled with more than 1,500 pages of a diary that belonged to her grandmother, Rosamond Pinchot, a woman born into one of the country's most illustrious political families.

Dubbed “the loveliest woman in America,” Rosamond was an acclaimed actress, socialite, and sportswoman. Yet, only 10 short years later her life came to a shocking end by suicide, setting in motion decades of confusion and sibling rivalry.

 ‘Money Fix’ screens June 25

The Columbia Gorge Earth Center’s ongoing film and lecture series continues on Thursday, June 25, with a screening of “The Money Fix,” at the White Salmon Library.

The film, featured in the 2009 Big Sky Film Festival, is a documentary on how money can be perceived in the world’s economy.

Blue Tattoo at The Vault

There’s local and regional music at The Vault in The Dalles coming up.

On Friday, June 19, Hookah Stew returns with powerpop, soul and more.

On Saturday, June 20, Pristine Blue is on stage with country and rock.

Next week, it’s classic rock from Blue Tattoo on June 26, and on June 27, it’s Crazy Train, the ultimate Ozzy Osbourne tribute band.

Future shows include: July 3: Ocean 503 R&B, soul and funk; July 4: DJ Hip Hop.

Sternwheeler Days June 27-28

The Columbia Gorge Lions Club presents the annual Sternwheeler Days celebration on June 27-28, in Cascade Locks. The event will feature local arts and crafts, the Mountain Man encampment, and a full schedule of family entertainment.

Bands include Kathy Boyd and Phoenix Rising on Saturday and Perfect Bedlam on Sunday.

The Columbia Gorge Yacht Club will have a parade of boats up the river from the Bridge of the Gods to the Cascade Locks Marina at noon, following the downtown parade.

Concerts in the Park June 20

A free Concerts in the Park music series starts June 20 in The Dalles City Park on Union Street. All shows are free and family-friendly — bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Music starts at 6 p.m.

June 20: Jackstraw (Bluegrass); July 4: Bohemian Social Club — all-star Gorge band with swing and blues to celebrate Independence Day; July 18: Jonathan Byrd and Chris Kokesh (folk); Aug. 1: Linda Hornbuckle and Janice Scroggins (gospel blues); Aug. 15: Gorge Winds 50 piece concert band; Aug. 29: Circled by Hounds (Traditional Irish).

Skamania Arts concert series

A six-concert series will bring regional and national acts to different venues in the Gorge and will run from April to September. The August concert will feature Janis Ian, and this will be her only Portland area appearance.
