Bluegrass festival returns

The Columbia Gorge Bluegrass Festival returns to Stevenson July 23-26 at the Skamania County Fairgrounds. National acts include Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, The Infamous String Dusters, David Grier and Mike Compton, The Quebe Sisters Band, Ida Viper, Urban Monroes, Prairie Flyer, and the Sleepy-Eyed Johns.

The festival features dances, instrument workshops, jamming and more. Weekend passes are $45, camping passes start at $10 per night. Full RV camping is available. Visit www.columbiagorgebluegrass.net for more information.

Benefit concert for Rick Hulett

Swing band Django's Cadillac will be performing at The Pines Tasting Room during the July 3 First Friday Downtown Art Walk. Donations will be accepted to benefit guitarist Rick Hulett, who will be undergoing cancer treatment.

Music starts at 5 p.m. with the Hapa Hillbillies and Django’s Cadillac starts at 6 p.m.

Gorge Wine Nights at Doppio

It’s Gorge Wine Nights at Doppio every Wednesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m., featuring a different winery every week. Admission to the wine tasting is $5.

July 1 — Pheasant Valley Winery; July 8 — Cathedral Ridge Winery; July 15 — Springhouse Cellar Winery; July 22 — Marchesi Vineyards; July 29 — Naked Winery.

Hapa Hillbillies at HR Hotel

Tilly Jam at Divots July 3

Hillstomp at River City July 3

On Friday, July 3, it’s a double bill at the River City Saloon with Portland’s trance-blues band Hillstomp. This duo combines homemade instruments into a danceable mix of down-home blues. The Sassparilla Jug Band opens this show.

‘Hit Machine’ at Naked Winery

Naked Winery features local and regional music this week. On Thursday, it’s “Bit Man Dan” with originals and select covers from 4-6 p.m. On Friday, July 3, it’s disco and dance music from “Hit Machine.” The band “1030” opens this show, from 4-7 p.m.

On Saturday, July 4, it’s country from the Fenderbenders, from 8-11 p.m. On Sunday, July 5, it’s Swing Crew from 5-7 p.m.

On Mondays, don’t miss Naked Winery’s Open Mic Jam, starting at 7 p.m.

Music, art at Hood River Hotel

Celebrate Independence Day weekend at the Hood River Hotel. On Friday, July 3, enjoy classical guitar from Andreas Ehrlich in the lobby from 6-8 p.m. Featured artist Kim Ojala will have paintings on display.

Moe Dixon at Stonehedge

Summer concerts return to Stonehedge Gardens on Wednesday nights in July featuring singer Moe Dixon and friends.

Every Wednesday in July will feature an all-you-can-eat surf-n-turf buffet dinner. Buffet starts at 6 p.m., concert starts at 7 p.m. Call for reservations.

Laser light show July 4

Add some sparkle to your Independence Day and kick off a new tradition with a family-friendly celebration at Maryhill Museum of Art. The picnic grounds will be open 5-8 p.m.

Meet Smokey Bear, who will share summer fire safety tips with youngsters, and make your own flag with muslin and fabric pens. Family-fun activities and admission to the museum are free for children under 17 with one adult admission.

At 6 p.m., enjoy a performance by the Gorge Winds, including Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. At 7 p.m., it’s music by Joannie's Jazz. At 10 p.m. it’s a “Light-tastic Laser Light Show” featuring brightly colored laser graphics and light beams set to music on the grand lawn. Admission to this show is free.

Henry Turner returns

Internationally known recording artist Henry Turner Jr. and his band Flavor will be bringing their unique brand of Louisiana reggae/funk music to the Trillium Cafe July 4 weekend.

With several hit singles and movie soundtrack credits to his name, Henry Turner has  played at major U.S. festivals including Bob Marley Fest, New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Reggae on the Mississippi and the International Heritage Celebration.

Maryhill Winery celebrates July 4

It’s a Red, White and Blue celebration at Maryhill Winery July Fourth weekend. Taste some award-winning wines, enjoy a fabulous view of the Columbia River Gorge while you picnic on the arbor. There will be family activities and live music all three days from 1-5 p.m.

Wyoming’ reading scheduled

Scott Sadil, author of “Lost in Wyoming,” will be reading from his book on Thursday, July 2, at the Hood River County Library at 7 p.m. The book “treats readers to a rare taste in literary fiction, the bittersweet pleasures of relationships afield. Men and women, fathers and sons, siblings separated by life’s unfathomable tides — the characters in these stories share in the heartfelt tug of wars — some funny, some sad — immediately recognizable in all of our lives.”

A book launch party for Sadil will be at The Pines Tasting Room in Hood River on Wednesday, July 1, from 6-8 p.m. Scott Sadil is the author “Angling Baja” and “Cast from the Edge.”

‘Allstars’ reunion July 11

The North Shore Allstars will be at the River City Saloon on Saturday, July 11. Tickets are $7 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased for $5 by calling 206-227-9463.

Started in 1990, this band has played Northwest venues for almost 20 years. This show will feature original members John Guay (guitar) and Doc Doolittle (bass), with Dan Crothers (keys), Dennis Williams (sax) and “Big Al” Isaksen (drums).

Kate Meloy at Thirsty Woman

The Thirsty Woman in Mosier hosts music on Sunday afternoons. On July 5, it’s tunes from the Kate Meloy Trio.  Join Craig, Kathy and Jim for a mix of blues, bluegrass and acoustic instrumentals.

Outdoor seating and barbecue available. Music is from 5-7 p.m. and there is no cover.

Music scheduled at Fort Dalles

The Fort Dalles Museum presents summer concerts on the fourth Sunday of each month. Music is from 4-6 p.m. and admission is free.

 July 26: Victor Johnson — Victor Johnson is an award-winning musician from The Dalles who specializes in traditional acoustic music and storytelling for kids and families. His CDs have won Parent’s Choice Silver Awards.

Aug. 23 — Rich & Connie Dunnington - Rich and Connie Dunnington perform folk favorites from the 1800s on violin and guitar.

TD Concerts in the Park July 4

A free Concerts in the Park music series is happening at The Dalles City Park on Union Street. All shows are free and family-friendly — bring lawn chairs and blankets. Music starts at 6 p.m.

Lavender Daze July 11-12

Hood River Lavender Farms will host its fifth annual Lavender Daze festival on Saturday and Sunday, July 11-12. The festival will feature more than 20 arts and craft vendors, barbecue from Charburger, on-site massage, Cathedral Ridge wines and games and activities for the kids.

Admission to the grounds is free, and there will be music on the main stage both days.

‘tick, tick…BOOM!’ opens July 9

CAST presents a production of “tick…tick…BOOM!” at the Columbia Center for the Arts.

The play tells the story of Jon, a young New York composer who is on the verge of being discovered, but is still having doubts and insecurities about his future. Together with Susan, his girlfriend, and Michael, his oldest friend, Jon ponders what lies beyond the decisions they all must face.

Along the way there are songs about relationships, the tribulations of urban life, the challenges of growing older and the need for friendships and connections.

The show runs July 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18 at 7:30 p.m. and July 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. in the theater at Columbia Center for the Arts, 215 Cascade Ave. in Hood River.

Tom Grant moves to Thursdays

The Tom Grant Band will be moving its monthly show at CEBU Lounge to Thursdays, starting June 25. The jazz band will feature pianist Tom Grant and special guests.

Music is from 8-11 p.m. and there is no cover charge.

Skamania Arts concert series

A six concert series will bring regional and national acts to different venues in the Gorge and will run from April to September.

The August concert will feature Janis Ian, and this will be her only Portland-area appearance.
