William ‘Monty’ Irving
William L. Irving, or more commonly known as “Mont” or
“Monty,” a longtime resident of Cascade Locks, Ore., passed away
the Portland VA Medical Center with family by his side on Jan.
27, 2010.
Monty was born March 8, 1926, in Gooding, Idaho, to William
Floyd and Afton Delilah Irving. He moved in his youth with his
family to Hood River, Ore. It was in his youth that
Monty developed a love for the outdoors.
Monty served our country proudly during World War II in the
U.S. Navy. He was stationed in the South Pacific and hauled
aircraft and was a signalman — or more affectionately known as a
“skivvy waver” — he was the flag man who helped aircraft land
safely on the carrier.
After the war he moved to Cascade Locks, Ore., and it was
during this time that he fell for a lovely young Genevieve Rose
Woodward and would find excuses to drive by her house. One day “Gen’s”
grandmother said, “Why don’t you invite that boy inside?” and
shortly thereafter, on May 19, 1947, they married; and to this
union were blessed four children.
Monty was proud of his service to our country and has been a
member of the VFW for more than 60 years. He was very active in
the Veterans of Foreign Wars and also the military order of the
Cootie an “Honored Degree” of the VFW. He is a past Grand
Commander (1962-63 and 1995-96) and the Cooties of the year in
1995. He and Gen both were active in the Cootie organization.
He worked for 27 years driving truck for Miller and Spear
Beverage Company. His route was throughout the Portland area and
he collected many friends along the way.
Monty enjoyed being with his family and friends. He enjoyed
the great outdoors; hunting and fishing. His family has many
fond memories of their hunting trips to the Ukiah and The Blues.
Monty is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 63
years, Genevieve Irving “Gen,” of their home in Cascade Locks;
four children, Janet (and Ronald) Eldridge, of Prineville, Ore.,
Chet (and Yvonne) Irving, of Vancouver, Wash., Sherilyn (and
Robert) Foley, of Cascade Locks, and Elizabeth Jimmerson, of
Gresham, Ore.; 15 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 17
great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martena Pennington, of
Cascade Locks, and Patricia “Pat” (and Ralph) Hesgard, of
Cascade Locks, stepbrother Seth Taylor, of Emmett, Idaho; and
numerous other family and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings,
Afton Delilah Taylor Dykman, Oscar “Pee Wee” Irving, Walter
“Pete” Irving and Richard “Babe” Irving.
Services are planned for 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, at Anderson’s
Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River. Family friend and
fellow veteran Larry Alexander will be the master of ceremonies.
