Cecil Marie Gibbons

Cecil Marie Gibbons passed away on Oct. 25, 2007, at the age of 73. She was born July 13, 1934, in Bolivar, Mo., to Melvin and Esther (White) Bratton.

Cecil’s family moved to the Hood River valley when she was a child. She was raised in Parkdale, Ore. Cecil attended Oregon State University and was a huge Beaver fan. She married Thomas T. Gibbons and they moved to Salem in 1967. Cecil worked as a medical transcriptionist and retired from Salem Hospital in 1996.

Cecil was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and was a volunteer at the Elsinore Theater. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas, and sister, Melva Syring.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Gibbons; sons Martin and Chris Gibbons; grandchildren Tyler, Lyndsey, Conner, Wil, Brandon, Ana, Erin and Molly; great-grandchild Gavin; and sisters Iva French and Mary Ann Bratton.

Those who wish may contribute to the Elsinore Theater or the Bone Marrow Unit at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital. A Memorial Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Lone Oak and Friendship, Salem. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

Irvin Tollerud

Irvin Harvey Tollerud, age 80, passed away on Oct. 25, 2007, at the Veterans Home in The Dalles, Ore. He was born on March 9, 1927, to Idan and Hilda (Grina) Tollerud in Pelican Rapids, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed at the North Immanuel Lutheran Church near Pelican Rapids.

Irvin went to high school at Crookston, Minn., and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 stationed in the South Pacific.

He married Jean Johnson on June 20, 1948, at North Immanuel Church. They moved to the Hood River area in January 1949, where he worked at the Dee Hardboard Plant for 30 years.

He was an active member of the Methodist churches in Odell and Hood River (Asbury). He served as trustee, treasurer, choir member and was active with youth groups. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America when his son, David, became an Eagle Scout.

Irvin enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States. He and Jean celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 20, 1998, with their children and all of their siblings present.

Irvin is survived by his wife, Jean, and daughter, Jann, who lives with her; son, Dr. David Tollerud, and his wife, Dr. Suzanne Ildstad, of Prospect, Ky.; granddaughter, Suzanne Tollerud, of Stanford, Calif.; grandson, David Tollerud II, of Washington, D.C.; sister, Eunice Wold, of Ulen, Minn.; brother, Lyle Tollerud, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Manley Tollerud, and his wife, Elenora, of Apple Valley, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Jeannine Tollerud, and brother-in-law, Arnold Wold.

Memorials can be given to the Asbury Methodist Church roofing fund or your favorite charity. A memorial service and reception will be held on Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Shirley Moses

Shirley Mae Moses died Oct. 26, 2007, at the age of 69.

She was born Dec. 8, 1937, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Ore. She graduated from Buckman School, in Portland, and married Ealmon E. Moses in 1953. They moved to Coalville, Utah, where they started their family. One year later they moved back to Portland, where she worked in the same furniture factory as her husband.

Before long they moved to Forest Grove, Ore., and eventually moved to Parkdale, Ore.

There, Shirley worked as a packer for Diamond Fruit Company, and in the spring she would graft fruit trees all across the Hood River Valley. In her spare time she would crochet small hats and baby blankets for newborn babies, and donated them to Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.

Shirley’s autumn years included compassionate service to family, church members and neighbors; she was a valued member of The Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints. Working in the Family History Center she often found that long-lost relative in the archive files and placed them exactly where needed on the family tree.

Shirley’s life was her family and she always had a good thing to say about everyone she met. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her only brother, Paul Benson Fitzpatrick, of Portland, Ore.; her sons, James Moses, of Hood River, Robert Moses, of Portland, Tom Moses, of Hood River, and Timothy Moses, of Hood River. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She will be missed.

Remembrances may be made to Hospice of the Gorge or the American Cancer Society of Oregon.

A service will be held at The Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints, 18th and May streets, on Friday, Nov. 2, with interment to follow at Idlewild Cemetery. Friends are welcome to attend.

Muriel Stolte

Muriel Jean Stolte, of Hood River, Ore., died peacefully on Oct. 28, 2007, at the Cascade Senior Care Center in Goldendale, Wash. She was 84 years old.

Before moving to Hood River six years ago to be closer to her son, John Stolte, and her daughter, Jayne Marchesi, and their families, Muriel lived 43 years in Greenbrae, Calif.

Muriel was born in Los Angeles, Calif., and lived there 25 years. She graduated from John Marshall High School, attended the University of California at Berkeley and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Muriel was a member of Delta Gamma and Pi Delta Phi, French Honorary Fraternity.

After graduation, she worked in the personnel department of Union Oil Company in Los Angeles.

In 1948, Muriel moved to San Francisco and worked at Standard Oil. She met her husband, Frank Stolte, in San Francisco and they were married in 1950 at the Montgomery Chapel in the San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo, Calif. In 1951, the couple moved to Mill Valley, Calif., where they lived for five years.

Muriel had many interests. She was a member of Delta Gamma Alumnae Association, Coffee Cuppers bowling league, Friends of Arequipa, Children’s Home Society and the Marin Cancer League.

Over the years, her hobbies included designing homes which her husband, Frank, built over the years as rental units in Mill Valley; playing badminton, taking aerobics classes, gardening, sewing, baking delicious desserts and playing bridge. She also enjoyed traveling with Frank.

Muriel was a teacher’s aide in French classes at local middle schools.

Muriel and Frank were married for 42 years until Frank’s death in 1996.

Muriel Stolte is survived by her son, John Stolte, of Hood River, Ore.; Kim Stolte, of Hood River; Jayne Marchesi, of Hood River; and Franco Marchesi, of Hood River; and five grandchildren, Eric Stolte of Mill Valley, Calif., Adam and Owen Stolte, of Hood River, Nicoletta Marchesi, of Eugene, Ore., and Alex Marchesi of Hood River.

A memorial service will be held in Mill Valley, Calif., on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. at the Mill Valley Community Church. A private graveside service will be held on Sunday at Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael, Calif.

Barbara Harper

Barbara Jolene Harper, a Parkdale, Ore., resident, died Oct. 27, 2007, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 69 years of age.

Services will be held Friday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Barbara was born Feb. 26, 1938, in The Dalles, Ore., to Lester and LaRue (Reed) Iles. She was raised and educated in Tigard and Mosier, Ore. On June 26, 1954, she and Billie Lee Harper were married in Parkdale, Ore.

Barbara worked for Diamond Fruit Growers for 38 years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, knitting, cooking, gardening, growing orchids and going to lunch with the ladies on Fridays.

Survivors include her husband, Billie Lee Harper, of Parkdale, Ore.; two daughters, Judi Beers and her husband, Jack, of Adams, Ore., and Kelly Harper, of Lincoln City, Ore.; sister, Sherry Godfrey, of Tillamook, Ore.; brothers Larry Iles, of Wallowa, Ore., and Craig Iles and his wife, Sue, and Randy Iles and his wife, Linda, all of Hood River, Ore.; and two grandchildren, Jay T. and Ann Beers. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Marjorie Higgins

Marjorie Irene Reed Higgins died Oct. 23, 2007, at home with family at her bedside. She was 95 years old.

She was born Dec. 30, 1913, in Burns, Ore. Her mother was a nurse and fifth-generation Quaker, and her father was a hay and cattle rancher. She met her husband, Richard, in Portland, where they married and made their life.

In 1945 they moved to the Hood River Valley where they had a pear ranch in Parkdale. They were active in the Parkdale Community Church and the Hood River Chorus under Boris Sirpo.

In addition, Marjorie was one of the founders of the first Migrant Children’s Head Start program in the valley, was president of her Hood River chapter of PEO, and was soloist in several musicals and comic operas performed in the Parkdale High School auditorium, and in the fall worked in the packing house sorting apples and pears. She also wrote poetry.

She is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughters, Mary, Rachel and Ruth, and her sister, Rayberta, as well as her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Dick Higgins, who died at the age of 21, and her younger sister, Eileen, who died in 2005.

Private services are planned in the spring.

Dorothy Mathison

Dorothy Mathison, a life-long resident of Hood River, Ore., passed away Oct. 29, 2007, at a local care center at the age of 97.

A service to celebrate the life and mourn the passing of this wonderful woman will be at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at Anderson’s Tribute Center with Pastor Andrew Wendle of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. A time of fellowship will follow in Anderson’s reception room. Committal services will follow the reception at the Pine Grove Cemetery.

Dorothy was born Aug. 1, 1910, to Perry and Nellie Wells in Hood River. She grew up in the Hood River Valley and attended grade school at Pine Grove School and graduated from Hood River High School in 1929.

During the 1920s and 1930s she climbed many mountains; Hood, Adams, St. Helens, Jefferson, Three Sisters and Broken Top in Central Oregon and Mount Thielson in Southern Oregon. Dorothy was an honorary member of the Crag Rats.

She married John Wickman, a forest ranger, in late 1929. They were divorced in 1936. In 1938 she married William Mathison, a local orchardist. They enjoyed many years together. William passed away Dec. 4, 1997.

In the 1960s she started entering items in the Hood River County Fair and did so until 2006. She won the “Queen of the Kitchen” and “Homemaker” award as well as many trophy cups in baking, canning and for her flowers.

Dorothy was a member of a writers club and had many articles published in the Hood River News, The Dalles Chronicle, The Senior Highlight, The Oregon Journal and other area magazines. She even wrote this obituary and set it aside for when it was necessary.

In addition to all her outdoor activities: mountain climbing and gardening — both flowers and vegetables — and crafting, writing and reading she also volunteered for the Hood River Museum, the Historical Society and the Hood River Election Board. Dorothy was also active in the Lutheran Church and more recently was called on by the pastor from Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Dorothy is survived and will be dearly missed by her son, Robert Wayne Wickman, and his wife, Judy, of Tacoma, Wash.; grandsons Michael Wickman, of Chicago, Ill., and Bill Wickman, of Hood River, Ore.; and numerous other family and many friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers.

It was Dorothy’s request that any memorial contributions should be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, the Crag Rats or the Hood River Adult Center in care of Anderson’s Tribute Center.
