She was born on Sept. 2, 1916, the youngest of four children to William Gerald and Anna Sophia (Carlson) Frick in Ladysmith, Wis.

Marian grew up in Hood River, Ore., and graduated from Oregon State College and University of Oregon School of Nursing with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. A registered nurse, mother, and homemaker, she married W.E. “Pat” Courtney on July 18, 1940, in Portland.

A resident of The Dalles for 61 years, she was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter Q, Red Cross, Lion’s Auxiliary, and various PTAs. Marian enjoyed sewing, knitting and gardening.

She is survived by her children: Mike Courtney and his wife, Donna; Patricia Correy and her husband, Eugene; Marie Wyzgala and her husband, Mark; John Courtney and his wife, Mary K.; grandchildren Tara and Ben Courtney, Joe Correy, Susan Rost, Scott Correy, Laura and Kate Wyzgala and Molly Courtney; and four great-grandchildren.

Wallace Keith Lage

Wallace Keith Lage, 95, passed away at his niece’s home in Ferndale, Wash., on Oct. 28, 2007. Born on Nov. 9, 1911, on the Ben Lage ranch in Pine Grove, Ore., he enjoyed a close bond to his sister Lenore until her death in 1998.

Keith married Edna Jackson in 1936. He and Edna owned and operated a pear and apple orchard in Pine Grove until health problems began to take over in the late 1980s. Edna preceded him in death in 1994.

Every child who ever visited Keith and Edna remembers the thrill of tractor rides, home-cooked meals and picking raspberries and pears at their Pine Grove farm. As is true for all farmers, Keith worked long days, caring for his crops and animals.

Many others remember him as their bus driver to school and athletic events. He claimed he received “a second education” driving the bus. He was a charter member of the Pine Grove Fire Department for 29 years; a real source of pride for him.

In 1990 he was honored for 40 years of faithful service for the Pine Grove Butte Cemetery Association, including caretaker of the cemetery, secretary-treasurer and manager. During his retirement he volunteered at the Hood River Historical Society.

Keith also knew how to play. He and Edna loved to travel, seeing most of the U.S., some of Canada and Mexico, as well as the Panama Canal. After acquiring a private pilot’s license he enjoyed still another dimension of travel. Edna later overcame her fears and joined him on flights.

Keith is survived by his nieces, Sue Goins (Colorado), Pat Edelbrock and her husband Gary (Salem, Ore.) and Judyann Marcum and her husband, Richard (Washington); and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Hood River on Monday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m. in the banquet room of Down Manor, Keith’s residence for 11 years. Interment will be at Pine Grove Butte Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pine Grove Fire Department, 2995 Van Horn Drive, Hood River, OR 97031, or to Whatcom Hospice, 800 E. Chestnut, Ste. 1-C, Bellingham, WA 98225.
