Earline Franke
Earline J. Franke, a Hood River,
Ore., resident, died Nov. 4, 2007, at Parkhurst House. She was
85 years of age.
Services will be held Thursday,
Nov. 8, at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery.
Earline was born June 8, 1922, in
Tomnolen, Miss., to Marvin and Susan (Woods) Jones. She was
raised and educated in Shady Grove and Eupora, Miss. She moved
to Indianola, Miss., where she graduated from Lynn High School.
She married at age 17 and lived in
Milford, Conn., from 1941 until 1946. Earline moved to Memphis,
Tenn., and resided there until 1963. She divorced in 1963 and
moved to Garden Grove, Calif.
In 1970 she married Chuck Franke
and moved to Trout Lake, Wash., where she operated a café for
four years. She then moved to Parkdale, Ore., where she resided
for two years; Hood River, where she resided for five years; and
then Maupin, Ore., where she resided until her husband retired
in 1990.
They traveled by RV for six years.
Earline loved traveling, sightseeing, meeting people, dancing,
hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, bowling, reading, crocheting
and spending time with family. She worked in quality control for
Quaker, retiring after 20 years.
Her husband, Charles Franke
preceded her in death in 1996; she was preceded by her sister,
Louise Hendon, and brother, Marvin Jones.
She is survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Brenda and Tom Ford, of Federal Way, Wash.; son and
daughter-in-law, Woody and Sylvia McGarrh, of Garden Grove,
Calif.; sister, Mauree Vassa, of Milford, Conn., and brother,
Alfred Jones, of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren Rusty Ford, of
Auburn, Wash., Vicky Willis, of Hood River, Ore., Sonja Ecklund,
of Olympia, Wash., Marcus McGarrh, of Corona, Calif., Brad
McGarrh of Corinth, Texas, Calif., Jim McGarrh, of Garden Grove,
Calif., Scott McGarrh, of Carrollton, Texas, Jim L. McGarrh, of
Virginia Beach, Va., and Kenneth McGarrh, of Newport News, Va.
Seventeen great-grandchildren and
two great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Interment will be at Pine Grove
Cemetery.

Gwendolyn Vanderslice
Gwendolyn Faye Vanderslice, a Hood
River, Ore., resident, died Nov. 5, 2007, at her residence. She
was 65 years of age.
Services will be held Friday, Nov.
9, at 2 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center.
Gwen was born July 11, 1942, in
Wichita, Kan., to William and Mary (Williams) Tucker, the middle
child of 12 children. She was raised and educated in Kansas.
On Oct. 27, 1970, she and Ray
Vanderslice were married in Nebraska. They had lived in numerous
places prior to moving to Hood River in 1993. Gwen had worked as
a nurse’s aide in nursing homes, retiring in 1982. She enjoyed
knitting, crocheting, reading and music.
Her husband, Ray, preceded her in
death in 2003.
She is survived by her sons,
Michael, Tim and Ray Vanderslice Jr., all of Hood River, Ore.,
and William Vanderslice, of Sayre, Okla.; daughters Bonnie
Vanderslice, of Pine Bluff, Ark., and Belenda Vanderslice, of
The Dalles, Ore.; grandchildren James, Ashley, Jason, Jessi,
Nicholas and Catherine Vanderslice; Norman Hall, Destiny and
Nicole Jefferson, David and Coby Martin and William and Dexter
Lunsford; and great-granddaughter, Makenzie Grace Moore.

Myrtle Holman
Myrtle Holman, a longtime resident
of Cascade Locks, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007, at Portland
Adventist Medical Center. She was 91.
She was born Myrtle Oline Finneseth
on Sept. 17, 1916, in Minot, N.D., to Theodore and Clara
Finneseth. She graduated from Norwich High School and later
worked as dietitian’s aide at Trinity Hospital in Minot. She
married Reynold “Bud” Holman on Oct. 5, 1941.
Myrtle and Bud farmed the family
homestead in north-central North Dakota, near Minot, growing
wheat, barley, oats and flax and raising milk cows. In 1957,
they moved to Cascade Locks with their three children. Myrtle
worked as a breakfast cook at the Charburger in Cascade Locks
for the next 21 years before retiring in 1979.
She was active in the Cascade Locks
Garden Club and the Women’s Fellowship at Cascade Locks
Community Church. She enjoyed working in her flower garden and
was known for her green thumb. Myrtle moved to Portland in 1996
to be near her children and grandchildren.
Myrtle was famous for her ability
to make perfect thin rounds of lefse, a Norwegian potato
flatbread, using virtually no flour — a skill she tried but
failed to pass along to her willing but lefse-challenged
children. She loved to spend time with her four grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
Myrtle was preceded in death by
Bud, her husband of 51 years, who died in 1992. He was a
longtime custodian and bus driver at Cascade Locks High School.
A son, Wayne, died in 1962 at age 11.
She is survived by a daughter, Judy
Willing; a son, James; a foster daughter, Barbara Neilsen;
grandchildren Coleen Speed, Jeffery Willing, Kira Holman and
Wyeth Holman; and great-grandchildren Brittany, Courtney and
Lacey Speed.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m.
Saturday, Nov. 10, at Cascade Locks Community Church.
Remembrances in Myrtle’s name may be made to the Women’s
Fellowship at Cascade Locks Community Church, 5 S.W. Benson St.,
Cascade Locks, OR 97014; or to Mercy Corps, 3015 S.W. First

William H. (Bill) Crews Jr., 96,
passed away Oct. 31, 2007. He was born March 4, 1911.
Bill is survived by two sisters,
Ann Jerald, of Tucson, Ariz., and Lauretta Schmitt, of
Beaverton, Ore.; two daughters, Nancy Young, of Bellevue, Wash.,
and Marilyn Richardson and her husband, Lloyd, of Tacoma, Wash.;
and one son, James Crews, and his wife, Diane, of Marysville,
Wash. Stepchildren are Ken Nelson and Lauree Winfield and her
husband, Bill.
Memorial services will be at 11
a.m. Nov. 15 at Hood River Church of the Nazarene, 2168 Belmont
Drive, Hood River, where both Bill and his deceased wife, Lola,
were members for many years. Memorial contributions may be made
to the Church of the Nazarene.
